Beginner motor for TALL guy?

Hello everyone,

I am about to get my drivers license and so I am looking all over the internet for a good beginner motor.
Thats how I've come across all the motorvlogs and this website, which inspires me, a professional video editor, to perhaps go Vlogging as well once I get enough driving experience.

We (my brother, my dad and myself) currently have three Laverda's (old-timers from 1974) but I want a motorcycle to drive to work 'everyday' (about 60km). And a Laverda is just not that kind of a motorcycle.

But most of the vids and forums I read about everyone is talking about the Ninja 250/300. But I think they are way to small for me since I am 2 meters (6foot6?) and they might also be to light since I'll be getting used to the Laverda as well (2x 750CC - 1 is 1000cc). (should be fun to vlog about the difference between normal bikes and the laverda - right foot shifting!)

Anyways, I hope you guys could help me out with some tips.

It's hard to suggest a bike for another person. It really depends on your personal preferences, body shape, comfort etc. For me I prefer crusier's as I find them really comfortable to ride and also like the look of them. Sports bikes are great too but for me not the most comfortable ride after about 45 mins or so. You really need to get down to a few dealerships and test out what is your best bike in terms of style. From there, I suggest taking a few out to test the bikes power compared to your experience level. For a new rider, I'd recommend that you stay under a litre bike however again, it depends on your ability and maturity level on the bike.

The most important thing to remember when you out there are multiple levels of respect. Respect your ability, respect the bikes ability, respect the road conditions, weather conditions, other drivers abilities etc. Any bike that you buy can be riden around as a put put but when you twist the throtle that little bit too far is when you find out the bike's true nature.

A good vlogger to check out is Chanelinked. He is a big guy that has purchased a couple of sportsbikes from beginner and he is a big guy too. From memory, I think his first may have been a Ninja but soon switched to a R6?

Anyway, when you make your choice, be respectful, have fun out there and stay safe.

For someone taller, a sport touring or even like a sporty "offroad" bike would be better. If you're comfortable with a higher cc, then something like the Kawasaki Versys or the BMW G650GS or something. As Phill said it's pretty hard to suggest. Find a place where you can sit on some bikes if you can and see what feels good. No other way to go about it.

I guess you're right and I shall just have to try out some bikes at a dealer before looking at secondhand bikes to get a better idea of what I want and need.

@Apex - Thanks for mentioning the Versys and G650GS - I hadn't looked in to that kind of bike. But they look really high and comfortable and I like the way they look. The BMW is definitely outside my price range. The Versys might just be reachable.

I also quite like cruisers and I think it's either going to be a cruiser or a sport touring because they would be most comfortable for the ride to work. And I would also like to go touring with it.

Yeah those Beamers can run pretty high, even used. A Versys is a really nice bike. I've sat on a few of them but I'm also pretty short. Other end of the spectrum.

Versys is a good bike, if your commute isn't too long you could consider a supermoto too. They often have 35-37" seat heights, thus you wouldn't look like a giant on them. DRZ 400SM is a decent bike to start on.

Also, if you like the Versys. I think the Suzuki Gladius is quite similar and I believe it's a bit cheaper as well.

Yeah, reading your thread W-Blokker, my first instinct was maybe a Dual-Purpose?? or as Phil said, a Cruiser will let you 'stretch ya legs' out a bit...

IMO, any bike shop that doesnt let you take a 'few' out for a test ride...or sit on a cpl...Walk away, go to another shop.
It is kinda like cloaths shopping, you gotta try a few, before you get the right Fit and Feel?
