Audio while riding over 90km/h

Hi
How's your audio when riding that fast? My voice gets very low at those speeds because of wind sounds, engine sound and road sound. Using the Sony AS15. Tips?

using external microphone?? ... if so then adjust position in helmet to find the sweet spot.... theres no real guarenteed guide/how to on it .. each persons helmet and voice are gonna vary the spot.... behind the edge of the cheek pad is popular though!! ... or use a better windsock thingy to cut out any harsh wind noise.... engine sound is always good though!!

no external microphone?.... see above!! ;)

Yeah, got external mic. I opened one of them paddings and put it inside that. I don't have the wind-in-mic sounds but wind like a soundwall... Hmm, hard do explain. But what I think is that my cam is trying to compensate the sounds. When I'm standing still it records my breathing like I had an asthma attack.. hehe so I mean that it try to balance it. Higher speeds, more notice, my voice gets drowned.

i get what you mean ... the camera has auto gain control (read it on the web) .. so all ambient/available noise is boosted/reduced for 'best effect' ..

helmets in general are a bastard of a place to record in... i think anyway .. wind noise, very close/d environment, background noise...

i think what your optimum might be is to insulate against external white noise.. which will also transmit through the helmet shell .. while having your voice recognised as 'prime source' better...

if the mic is positioned closer to the shell of helmet/behind cheek pad then i think it is more likely to 'focus' on outside noise.... if the mic is positioned closer to your cheek/head then it might focus on your voice more (because your voice will also 'rumble' through your head/neck/skin??) .. so microphone contained kind of WITHIN the cheekpad - so it doesnt rub on your face but its close to YOU ... if microphone between cheekpad and helmet shell .. then its closer to outside noises..

thinking out loud for the general example .. you have your camera running.. you are in a car with window down travelling maybe 50mph .. camera a few inches inside door pillar facing outwards.... maybe some wind buffet noise? , some background noise and some voice ... move the camera to immediately next to door pillar/outside line and noise levels in from outside general will increase rapidly to a 'shriek' .... move the camera towards centre of the car/gearshift console and the noise levels are much more of 'inside the car' ... wind the window up and theres hardly any outside noise...

your camera wants to balance all that itself... so you have to give yourself the 'best option' directional sound picked up by microphone - your voice ... so MORE PADDING to outside sources and only thin padding towards you ... still need some padding there or you going to get the Darth Vader breath again!

A huge thank you for this answer with loads of information and tips! Good job! :) ..and no, it's not ironic. I know now what I will try to make it better :)

I usually just put music over real fast speeds... just too much wind noise to avoid. my two cents ;) .....

BTW, where in the heck do you get to drive over 90 over there :o ??! The max speeds on the Interstate here in my state is 75... must be the Autobahn :p ~

jk ;)

Keeping the mic away from my helmet shell greatly improved my audio. I've not put any videos out since doing this though.

Mines just infront of my cheek pad. If i put it further back, The wind noise comes through the helmet, Weird...

also get a small "Cat" on it, that fluffy stuff

I tested on the motorway by putting a buff headwear between the gap under my chin, feels weird but worked for me. After my first vlog motorway sounding shit I needed a backup plan just in case I vlog on there again

Chin curtains are like $10.
Even though my helmet (Icon Alliance) doesn't have an "official" chin curtain, there is one for other icon helmet that fits.

Well I don't know if they make one for a Caberg Hyper X Mod, as the chin guard is removable. But I don't need one, so $10 wasted still.
