Audio technica 3550

My camera (Sony action cam) doesn't have a manual gain control. It has an auto gain control.
My bike and wind noise in my helmet overwhelm the cheap mic I have (I get lots of clipping). I've tried editing the sound file but I can't get rid of the background noise without ruining the quality of voice.

So, I got this mic which is what a lot of motovloggers use

I haven't tested it yet. Just wondering if anyone has experience with it. Is this one not as easily overwhelmed or something? So many have success with it but I'm not sure if they're able to control the gain more than I am.

I may have to go with a separate recording device if this doesn't work.

I had that mic, used it on the Go-Pro. Mine did not hold up well, hopefully you will have better results. I used it on a meet-up and every video I made that weekend had no audio.

I personally use that mic and i have to say I'm VERY happy with the result. The cable is long as hell and you need to mount the on off switch somewhere easy to access and change batteries (i have mine coming out the back of the helmet and i tuck it into the back of my jacket).

I am using it with a hero 3 and don't have to make any audio adjustments in post, all the levels seem to be sweet from the get go.

Just an update so far.
There is a user error. I keep forgetting to turn it on. A few times I made sure I turned it on. Later it was off. Four vlogs are worthless. It sounds great when it's on.
I'm getting a little pissed at myself.

I'm going to try a different mic. The sound quality of the audio technica is good. I simply can't deal with the 20 feet of cable. I need to be able to place the mic and leave it in my helmet once I find the sweet spot. Only the cheek pads are removable in my helmet so I'm really limited with where to put the battery and the excess cable.
So, I'm going to try the Sony ECMCS3 stereo mic.

I'll update you fools when I get it.

Hey Tito, i have posted all my test footage of the ATR on AridersLifeUncut there you can see RAW footage and audio as i talk about each slightly different position, i found covering half the mic with audio foam works well

I saw those and they've been a big help. I told the weather to shape up when I have time to go and ride, but the weather isn't listening.

For this Thursday though, I shot some "bike porn".

I was looking into getting one of these but changed my mind based off of various reviews. I didn't like the fact that it has a separate battery as well as a separate switch to turn it on, because like others mentioned i'd totally forget to turn it on. i ended up getting a cheap 10 dollar one off of ebay to try out while i search for a more worthwhile one.

Dan,

I'm considering it. Aren't those a 2.5mm plug? My cam takes a 3.5mm. I need to check out some adapters first. I really like the Sony Action Cam. It takes beautiful footage but it's been difficult to work with for motovlogging.

I like this mic a lot as well. I've heard of people cutting the long cable and re-soldering the wires, for 20 bucks it might be worth a try. I also sometimes forget to turn it on but hey just have to build on the habit of checking it. I've had it turn off once but I wrapped a piece of velcro around it and haven't had a problem since then.

You can find a good adapter for fairly cheap (under $10) that wont cause any drops in quality. Saves you the trouble of finding a perfect mic too. Audio Technica makes good stuff, that's all I can say. I have a pair of studio headphones from them.

I don't suppose you have any pics of the wires stripped in case i want to try this?

No, I didn't take any photos and I don't have the mic any longer. If I remember correctly, the wire was extremely frail and the connection would easily break. It's a shame they make the stupid cable so long. Even when it was working, I often forgot to turn it on.

WAAIIIIIIIIITTTTTT!!!!
Why are you guys buying external battery-powered mics when the crappy ass Sony camera can power up whatever mic you plug in?
See that little PLUG IN POWER text there?
