wasn't my experience when I took the VFR1200 out for a test ride the month they came out - fortunately had extreme brakes which slowed me up from very fast - fast
 
I think engine braking is more up to bike weight, engine compression and which gear you are in. Hardly related to how the power is transmitted to the wheel. Only maybe in the case when the wheel is oil driven, but I don't think any production bikes have that.
 
the shaft just doesn't cut it with me - I like the chain drag and not rely on brakes all the time
In my experience with the vfr1200 the engine braking isn't too bad but I usually default to brakes anyways to be safe but I see your problem.
