Well if you want to step up in power the VFR1200 is a super nice bike as well.

My Moto Guzzi has amazing engine braking, shafts don't take that away, if anything they will add to it!

wasn't my experience when I took the VFR1200 out for a test ride the month they came out - fortunately had extreme brakes which slowed me up from very fast - fast

to be honest, a v-twin will always have decent engine braking so my above comment is kinda mute

I think engine braking is more up to bike weight, engine compression and which gear you are in. Hardly related to how the power is transmitted to the wheel. Only maybe in the case when the wheel is oil driven, but I don't think any production bikes have that.

In my experience with the vfr1200 the engine braking isn't too bad but I usually default to brakes anyways to be safe but I see your problem.
