Anyone Know About Dechroming?

Hey all

Anyone any experience of dechroming engine casings?

The casings on both sides of my Virago are really badly pitted, and this winter I plan to dechrome them and then either buff them up and lacquer them, or get them painted. I don't really like the chrome look, so not going to rechrome them.

Anyone had any experience of getting them dechromed, and how much it might cost?

Cheers

best bet is to get it chemically stripped as if its real chrome it will have multiple layers

a shop that does anodizing will likely be able to help, not sure on cost

anodizing is pretty complicated and has to be done to a T. you can add dye to change the color but I would have a professional shop do it, if one is near you.

Agree with you there, if you don't know what you are doing see a professional!

Why don't you like the shiny shiny?

Cheers guys. The shiny shiny just aint my thing, and over time if I keep the bike it is likely to change somewhat anyway.

I think proper chemical stripping is the only way, unless I can find some exact non-chrome replacements for cheaper on ebay.

tried to dremel/sand off chrome on a metal decepticon thing from japan one time. i only made it through in a few spots and scuffed the rest. get it chemically dipped, save yourself a ton of work
