I used to only be into road, the handful of sand road experiences got me thinking there is no grip ever and there is not much you can do to control the bike. Years ago I was forced to take some rather nasty (I thought at the time) dirt road, it was raining, I almost fell. Typical first off road experience.
I got through the road much easier than I expected and really loved going offroad, never actually went proper offroad until I bought the Tiger 800. Which I got free hardcore offroad training (from gentlemen on GS1250's, so you know its proper
). Made me realize how potent motorcycles can be off road, even 220kg bikes with road tyres.
tl;dr: Bikes can take you to places off road that you cant even walk to.
