All That Extra Footage?

Hey guys, I'm just starting out and haven't posted a video yet. I'm still learning Vegas Pro.

I always have my camera on while I ride so I have a lot of footage of nothing happening. What do you guys do with that? Do you keep it or do you just throw it away if there is nothing usable on there? And lets say you make a video, do you throw the original out after you upload the Vlog?

I have a GoPro 3+ Silver and record at 720p 60 frames so my unedited videos are starting to take up a lot of space...

I trash most of my unused footage. The only footage is the edited video I plan to upload, and I keep it on a separate HDD.

If I were you, I would get a 4-5 TB external HDD, then keep two to three seperate folders.

One for the old unused clips
One for used clips
one for Edited final versions

I second the external HDD, saves your laptop losing all its memory and then all your videos will start to render slower and your laptop will just pack up. I throw unused footage, but keep both unedited and edited versions of the upload in case i want any clips editing differently for a montage :)

When I've been out for a drive in which I think nothing noticable happened I just format the card straight from the camera ;)

I just save the final edited videos on an external hdd in case I want go back and make a montage later I delete all originals and unused files unless something is in them that I may want to use later. Sometimes I'll just go in and take out only the part that I may use later that way the file I keep is smaller. Either way an external hdd is the way to go.

I used to keep all the project footage I used for the video until I realized how much memory it was taking up. I now only keep a clip if I plan on using it in a vlog in the future (ex. keep footage of random people or things you see and you could make a trolling video). Otherwise everything gets deleted except for the edited movie

You can waste a lot of your life reviewing boring footage with nothing happening. If I have not edited my footage within a couple of days then I junk it... truth be told by that time I cant remember if there was anything worth keeping on it after then....if I know something has some good shots on it then I copy it off sooner rather than later and rename it with something meaningful to remind me.

I wish there was a program that can trim the ends off the raw go pro footage with out re-encoding ect I often have big spaces of nothing happining before or after and event. I seem to loose a lot of space that way

if theres a small little incident i save that clip and edit the file name to the time it happened. eg 0813.mov
so at 8min 13sec i know to look out for it, Those files go in the clips folder.

Then theres a vlog folder, I dump all footage on there. Sometimes i do a vlog 3-4 times before i complete it without fudging up my words. Once the vlogs edited, I watch it and confirm its all good... then delete the raw stuff

I keep the rendered video on my pc until the next vlog, i just over write it.
