Advanced Riding Courses.

Sorry admins I wasn't sure where to stick this!


So I'm looking at ARC's to cheapen my insurance and get some tips. Has anyone here done any? If so, which ones? Thing is, Bike Safe is meant to be pretty good due to the fact the police are involved, but then of course you have the Institute of Advanced Motorists, California Superbike School, and more. It gets a little confusing!

Any advice = much appreciated

Bike Safe isn't advanced riding, it's pointers on how to improve, although they may show you some advanced techniques.

Best bet is your local IAM or RoSPA group. Find ones within a reasonable distance, go to a meeting, see who you like, how they are etc and choose from there. Some are stuck up elitists, most are there as they like riding, and want people to do it safer and get more out of it.

IAM is £140 + a few quid to your tutor for his fuel (he's unpaid)
RoSPA is £20 (isn) annual membership to the local group, fuel donation as above and £60 for your test when you're ready.

Private tutors will cost £100-£200 per day, but you get the whole day.

Where are you based? Couple of RoSPA/IAM folk on here. @Shifty is IAM, @T'Biker is IAM (lapsed) and doing RoSPA and he will get a Gold standard when he takes his test. I've seen him ride, it's flawless

Depends what your doing it for? If it's to get expert tuition and become a better rider, crack on. If it's to reduce your insurance, prob not worth it. The cost of what you pay will nullify any reduction.

ERS tends to bring down insurance but nothing major to be honest!

The best thing to get your insurance down is actually a GPS tracker to be honest, although that doesn't help with improving your riding!

I agree with @Lurch. Go along to a IAM check ride out and do a Rospa one too. It's really important you get on with the tutor, and each other's style. If you're on a sports bike and your tutors on something similar it would be better too to have a similar reference point. But you should be pleasantly surprised most are down to earth and some are really sh!t hot riders.
