surely entering a mix of 10 letters wouldn't stop you posting, I'd have thought if it where on the sign up page it would put people off, you want people to sign up but you only want actual people to post threads so makes sense?

I'd still post topics, & I'm sure you would & many others would get used to it if they really wanted to say something. it's not everytime you post a reply is everytime you want to start a new topic which is usually one maybe 2 a day off somepeople.

Just because there currently is only one admin doesn't mean there can only ever be one.

At the moment, the forums, especially yesterday, were nigh on unusable because of spam bots.

There are plenty of people who can, and will happily, help on here!

He's keeping it to one for a reason. Spam attacks happen to -all- forums. I personally never saw a single spam post, so it didn't really last -that- long. You had a hard time reading through all the posts? Sorry, but live with it. Sometimes shit happens and the best thing to do is to report as many as you can and say "Heh, guess I'll have to give them time to fix it." and come back tomorrow.

Well said. Cant there be more mods on the forum then so they can delete the bots post and ban them?

Of 5 moderators 2 of them are in GMT. Ofcourse they're not very active. I'd agree with a motion to remove them and set up two others. The hard part is finding those worthy.

Due to your timezone you may have missed the worst of it, but anyone on GMT (or +1) will agree that there were lots and lots of bot posts that day!

The whole point of this thread was to ask for/suggest ways of dealing with the issue, not about me, you know, i was kinda trying to help the community!

Catcha are too off putting to a lot of people and bots can still be programmed to read them. A simple honey pot is far easier and better and normal users wont even see it or know its there.

Just search for "honey pot phpbb" or look on phpbb support forum.

At one point I logged on and every single post on the first page of recent topics was a spam message. Maybe you guys need to find some people with more time to on their hands to help keep the place tidy.

I generally check the forum every few hours. Though the other day I was pretty consumed with digging up past info for job applications and the such, so it's very likely that I only checked in once that day, maybe twice. Although from the sound of it it happened while I was asleep..which is something every user of the board does.

Let me make it clear, I DO agree that we need more active mods, especially over the pond. My point is that it was dealt with as quickly as possible, and I for one never got a single notice about it. If the report notices only go to Admin then that would explain it, and that shouldn't be the case. I believe reported posts used to go to all mods and admin alike. But right now it seems that the only person to get notified was Matt. I know I didn't hear anything about a spam post until well after the fact. You guys can't really expect us to be on here at all times, nor can you expect us to be able to magically know what's going on and that we need to come do something.

I'm going to start a conversation with Matt about it and see what the deal is, perhaps it will lead to more mods, perhaps it will lead to more admin, perhaps it'll just lead to the mods actually getting the reports. Who knows, just be patient while we get this whole thing figured out.

Yeah...and was it really that bad? Just pretend like the site was down for maintenance and don't let it inconvenience you (not you specifically, haha). It's not like there are week old spam messages floating around the site. I think they get dealt with in a reasonable amount of time . I mean other sites get spam too, and I sometimes come across these message/bots before a mod is able to deal with it. I just report the thread, go along with my day, and it's taken down in reasonable time. Yeah, it was odd that so many spambots appeared/posted around the same time, but how many times does that happen? It's usually one, maybe two new threads at a time.
