Not sure if you have heard but they are going to try and change the way motorbikers get their licences in 2013.

http://www.artmotorcycletraining.co.uk/ ... t-2013.htm

So currently I have taken the A2 licence, I am allowed a 33bhp bike for 2 years, then the restrictions are removed. But if this comes into power, am I going to be stuck with a 46 bhp bike till im 24?

Can anyone make sense of this?

Pretty much everyone's aware by this point, but I can clarity your query for you.

People who get their licence before the changes are unaffected by said changes. Therefore you'll be restricted to 33bhp for two years, then automatically de-restricted once they pass.

I was hoping that, but this link makes me think differently.

http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/new-driving- ... -tricycles

"Existing motorcycle and tricycle riders

If you already have full motorcycle entitlement, it won't change under the new EU rules. Anyone who passed a practical category A motorcycle test before 19 January 2013 will still be restricted to a motorcycle of 25kW for two years from the date of test pass.

However, from 19 January 2013, if you want to ride a larger motorcycle you will need to follow the new rules for motorcycle riders outlined below.

Category B1 (quads and tricycles) will no longer be granted as a sub-category of category B and there will also be changes to how tricycle entitlements will be displayed on the licence.

Existing tricycle riders will not lose their category B1 (trikes and quads) entitlement but it will be displayed differently on driving licences issued from 19 January 2013. It will be shown as category B1 and category A (restricted to tricycles), unless the rider already holds full A entitlement.
"

Not sure if I am just being simple or this doesn't make sense to anyone else, but it implies that if you are currently holding the restricted licence then it will change when the new licence comes in.

If you pass your motorcycle test on 18th January 2013, you will be restricted to 33bhp until 18th January 2015 as per regulations that are currently in force. Only if you pass it from 19th January 2013 will you fall under the new regulations.

I'm going to assume that this line is the one that's making you think:

What that's referring to is people who do the restricted test and then take direct access before the restricted period is over, allowing them to ride a bigger bike.

Here's an example of how it works at the minute. Let's say you're 20 years old. You take the restricted licence test, meaning you're restricted for 2 years to under 33bhp.

But wait! You can do direct access at 21 and ride anything. This means doing two test, but you're not stuck on the restricted period for the full 2 years. There isn't much point in doing this in my opinion, but people do.

If you're thinking of doing that, you can't under the new rules. I really doubt this will affect many people. Don't worry about it.

Sometimes I get annoyed living in good ol' 'murika but with my love for bikes you UK fellas sure make me feel a bit better. Of course we have 5x the amount of people on bikes that don't know how to control them.

No doubt, the best/dumbest thing is that I actually took my test on my 49cc Ruckus - it's a moped but due to a new law in 2011 in Iowa it has to be registered as a motorcycle if it does more than 30 - it isnt based on motor size anymore. So I got to take my motorcycle test on it. Next day I bought my 2001 750cc GSXF and I'd never ridden a bike before. The system is flawless
