trying to figure out what parts of my clutch i need to replace. i can dump the clutch out in 1st and it wont stall out. i also i have a video of it slipping around 6k in every gear. my buddys say i just need new plates

Cost me £250 for new plates to be fitted for my Virago, parts extra. Likelihood is it's the friction plates rather than the metal ones, may need some new springs and oil filter, will need change of oil, new sump bolt and magnetic washer. Good time to replace clutch cable too.

I bought replacement metal and friction plates off internet, much cheaper than original parts, but nowhere near as good quality.

Was going ot do the job with a mate, but when I looked at the book, it was really much more complicated than "just take off the side and replace the plates" and required specialist tools for some of the parts, and ensuring everything goes in exactly is hard to judge from a DIY POV

I agree... try a good quality motorbike oil first... the wrong oil will make a motorbike clutch slip.

Older post but thought I'd reply anyways. If you have a wet clutch and use oil with wear additives it can make your clutch slip. I think its a JASO standard that should be on the bottle.
