1080p@30fps Or 720p@60fps

I have a gopro Hero 3 and can only get 60fps at 720p resolution.

A friend commented on my first motovlog to shoot at 1080p and even at the lower frame rate, should be better.

Any thoughts? Which is the preference if you had to pick? Frame Rate or Resolution?
I always figured a higher frame rate would be better when on a motorcycle due to moving quite fast, head moves fast (gopro is on helmet).
 
I upload everything in 30fps unless it is Cars and Coffee. Uploading in 30fps but having 60fps source footage gives you the opportunity to slow time by a factor of one without loss of motion. Pretty neat.

720p is fine, but 1080p is the real standard now, and in a few years we might be looking at 4K resolutions. My advice would be to run in 1080p myself.
 
60fps is smoother, but I think 1080 is much better.

You could experiment to see how each one comes out after being uploaded (set it to unlisted).
 
With YouTube 30fps is definitely the way to go. YouTube has crap bit rates for 60fps content and 30fps will look far sharper for now.
 
I would go with 60fps @720p It just looks so much better and if you look at your analytics most people are watching on the computers and I bet not many go full screen while watching. So 1080 if you cant do it at 60fps is no great loss.

BUT zooms into detail is next to useless on 720 ;)
 
I work at 1080@60 with my main cam and 1080@30 on my second cam this is because i want to be able to zoom and slow down footage if need be.
 
Shoot 1080@60 with my Sony A6000, and use it for widescreen stills. Edit @60, save and upload to YouTube 1080@30 or 720@30. Shoot 720@60 with my GoPros, edit @60, save and upload to YouTube 720@30.

Prefer 720@30 uploads due to file size, and so many are viewing on mobile devices. All things being equal, I'd shoot everything 1080@60, edit @60, then save and upload to YouTube 720@30.
 
im switching back to 1080 30fps, have been running 720 60 for a while

30fps is better for low light situations. Thats the only difference to me

That's a big factor a lot of people don;t consider with the higher fps. Even things like going into the shade of some trees or a mountain look a lot better at 30fps on the GoPro so it's not like you only get the benefit when riding at night.
 
i've had quite a few guys say 60fps gives better results on youtube but i experimented briefly and didn't find that to be the case.

the main technique for forcing better quality from youtube seems to be filming at 2k or even 4k in which case youtube uses a higher quality compression algorithm. i couldn't be bothered due to the file sizes, reduced battery life and extra processing time for export and upload.

i'm happy with the results from 1080p 30fps with a gopro black 4 if i wait for good lighting conditions and do what i can to get smooth footage.

the dutchtexan makes a very good point though above.... it won't be long before 4k is the standard resolution and our current 1080p vids will start to look pretty crappy in comparison.
