Pretty much yep. I asked about and discovered that the only people who wear them on track are people like me....kinda scary and of course, that's track.

It's a bit late to find out after the event.
I've seen people with armour vests that they wear what they like over it. I don't have a proper back protector in my jacket, it's a bit of high density closed cell foam, about 10mm/3/8" thick.
