Youtube New Advert Policy...

So what do you guys and girls think of YouTubes new policy they are introducing where people can will be able to pay a small free to watch youtube without adverts on?

Before you ask yes some of that fee will go to content creators.

I wonder if they are going to start blocking computers with adblock and the like installed?

It's a step in the right direction but I will never be using it.

If they blocked adblock I'd just be incredibly selective about what videos I watch, cutting down to about 1/4 of my viewing time.

I think the idea is good. We will see how it plays out. I can see content creators making videos for sub users only and such but it will ensure that content creaters that relied on ads don't get wrecked by adblock.

If you do that too aggressively then how will your potential subs ever find your content?

Twitch seems to do well with the donations idea, maybe this will work in a similar way where people sign up to give something back to the creators or if they don't want any adverts.

A very good point but I imagine that those who allow their content or prioritise content for youtube subscribers must be rewarded in some way?

Too early to tell and we'll see the big Tubers pick it up and run with it.

What I wonder is how closely Youtube will track viewing. I.e, if somebody who pays watches ONLY my videos, will I get ALL of the money? Or will it be more like the way musical royalties are distributed in that they just divide it up based on a predetermined ratio between the big record companies.

On a side note, we're all in this club together. So when i watch a video by a Motovlogger and there are ads, I will almost always let the ad run. It's the least I can do to give something back to the creator. It doesn't cost me anything! So that said, I think that being in this 'club' and using ad-blockers while watching other vloggers' videos is bad sport!

I'm guessing you'll keep getting similar revenue to what you do now. Afterall, it's virtually nothing per view.

Well if you have over I think it is 5k subs (would have to check) things you can do are

Paid only videos - you can make some of your videos (you pick) pay per view
Donations - you can set up a donate function (Not tried it but had it as an option for a long time)

As for people saying well Ill only watch the videos I like if they block advert blockers. Well thats kinds the point ;) If you block the adverts how does google/youtube pay for the service?

Weirdly I have watch my income from YouTube go from 30 quid a month (petrol money!) down to about 5 quid a month even though I have the same views etc. Now Im not saying thats 100% because of advert blocking but yes it is having an impact.

So you can see why google/youtube are experimenting with other ways to generate an income.

It depends on how much its goign to be.. I could probably pay $5 a month?

in the end we all want money from youtube, but we arent willing to sit and watch an ad, or click on a link.

This is a direct copy paste from another forum I am active on, and where they where talking about it. I didn't feel typing the same story with different words so here it is!

"I LOVE the new subscription model from a geek numbers crunching standpoint. That is... if my understanding of it is based on truth. Who knows what algorithm they'll use to divvy up the revenue. I am assuming a straight cut for every video watched, I might very well be wrong, so take the following with a grain of salt.

Let me illustrate:

55% of the 8 dollars will go to the creator, just like the ad revenue. So that means that per YouTube subscriber (YTS) there is 4.4 usd per month that will be distributed over videos that are watched by that YTS. If a YTS watches 1000 videos in that month that would mean a 4.4 dollar RPM.

1000 videos in a month means more than 30 videos a day. Not many watchers will reach that number. So the potential piece of the pie might even be bigger! 500 videos a month is still more than 16 videos a day. But the RPM is an effective 8.8 dollars at that point. 250 videos a month is around 8 a day, which is a pretty realistic number for someone like myself. Guess what? The effective RPM turns into 17.6 dollars!

A view from a YTS might very well be more valuable than that of a regular viewer. A YTS view is guaranteed revenue backed. A regular view might be, if an ad is rolled. However, it will be more likely you'll encounter a video with an add rolling if you are a regular user. This is because there are less views eligible to have ads run on (the YTS's don't get ads remember?). So, more chance of revenue, assuming YouTube does not loose any ad slots that is...

I will check my graphs come July and see what's what! I am not depending on YouTube for my revenue, but I have a feeling most folk will see a bump in income."

I see where you're coming from, but the ads are so intrusive these days that I wouldn't watch anything without blocking them. If there are channels that only use the overlay adverts and not in video adverts I would happily allow them, but everyone just ticks all of the ad options these days.

If I like someone enough (like accidentalbroadcast) I donate to them directly. YouTube doesn't need to make any money from me with the intrusive adverts. If they reverted back to the old adverts I'd happily unblock ads.

Put like that it does seem quite rosy. And you have to assume that Youtube is ONLY doing it because they believe that they will make more money. The downfall for us could well be that we are a bit of a incestuous lot in that we all watch each others stuff! So the potential number of OUR audiences that will go for a paid subscription will be somewhat limited. As much as I love all your videos, I shan't be paying Youtube to remove the ads for me! Though I have already said that I don't really mind the Ads anyway!

Lurch, in response to your post, I have some interesting numbers for you. I have a friend that works within the Google machine (sadly he doesn't have any sneaky tricks to vault me to the top of the searches but he did say that I'm doing about as much as I currently can without paying for advertising).

Anyway, he basically summed it up that 1,000,000 (1 Million) views on a monetized video is equal to roughly $7,500 (seven thousand, five hundred US Dollars) to the creator. I can't decide if thats good or bad. But it does mean that I would need to be getting at least 3 million views per year to be able to quit my job!!! :D

My point exactly! If I've got ads on my videos (I do, again. I got fed up with fighting the settings!) then I will happily watch other peoples ads. It's fractions of pennies, but they all add up.

In fact, I've almost made enough in the last 18 months to half fill my bike with fuel! Shame I'll have to wait another 4 years until I reach the minimum $60 withdrawal threshold!!

Hmm, so the few vloggers that have gone full time YT must be hitting the multi-million views!!!

And if you get a viral video, you need to be hot on getting the monetisation in your direction :)

Not true.
OhPhilly (before he disappeared) had 10k subs and he dropped to working for himself (online store iirc) with YT income as support.
Wateriffic has 50k subs and he just went full time. I've noticed he only gets about 1/5 of views per subs though.

You beat me to it, but I was going to say that the full timers must have other income streams. Merchandise and sponsorship and the Like. Everide is a full timer and his numbers, though pretty impressive, aren't humongous.
