Thinking About Creating A Donation Page For New Camera

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I'm thinking of creating a donation page in order to help me fund my purchase of a new camera, a Drift Ghost S, as the purchase of my bike, insurance, gear & vlogging equipment has been costly to say the least. Being a student doesn't help at all hehe, but I'm looking for part-time jobs. I currently use a Mobius ActionCam, however it's not making life easy at all. Battery life is around half an hour and I need to use my mobile phone to record my audio as the Mobius doesn't allow the use of external mics. After watching many different motovloggers who use Drift's cameras, I have come to the conclusion that the Drift Ghost S will be perfect for my channel. 1080p @ 60fps is just great, low light mode will help with recording in wintry London/ the dull English weather in general, external mic input would make life easier etc. I'd still have use for the Mobius, it just wouldn't be my main vlogging camera, I have a handlebar mount for it so it'd be great for shots that look at me.

I guess I'm answering my own question here: the thing is, at this moment in time I'm against the idea as my channel is very new. New to the point that I haven't even uploaded a vlog yet (this will change very soon)! I feel as if by asking people to donate at this stage (or even at all) I may come across as being selfish, I don't even know if I'll be a good vlogger! Perhaps I should wait, I don't know my viewers, my viewers don't know me. I'm thinking that I should let my viewers (if there will even be any XD) get to know me through my vlogs and the content I produce in general.

To be honest, right now I don't think I mind using the Mobius, syncing the audio with my video footage isn't difficult at all, it's just that I know that the quality of my content can be so much better!

TL;DR - New channel, thinking about asking for donations, feel bad about it.

I'd greatly appreciate it if you guys could voice your opinions.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, sounds about right. I could ask on my 'main' channel which is pretty large in contrast to my new one, but I'd like to keep them separate as the response to my motovlogging channel wasn't that great.

Hopefully I may not even have to resort to asking for donations as eBay auctions are popping up, I have lost a good few auctions but there are still other chances to be grabbed :)
 
To be honest you should just wait and save up. I just finished college and yes money is tight but I was able to save up several times and now actually have all 3 top action camera (gopro, sony, and drift). Plus as already mentioned vlogging should be for fun and sharing personal experience not to be used as a way to get people to donate.
 
Save up, there's no way donations will give you what you need. I used to do photography and video at events and I had a link for donations if people liked my work and felt the need to donate. Never received a dime, not that I can blame people. Most of us have enough on our plates as it is.
 
Hmm, the S is one of ghe most expensive cameras, and there's deals to be had on Hero2/3 and older Drifts. Sont AS30 is half the price of an S too. The S is a great picture, but do you *need* to start with one?

Thanks for your inputs, much appreciated. Looks like I'll just save up. Bidding on a few on eBay that are currently within the bounds of what I have saved already so you never know, this thread may (hopefully) become invalid.

Not really interested in the GoPro range as I just can't live with a block on my helmet hehe. Older Drifts have been considered but the video quality and the framerate just doesn't cut it for me and it won't allow any flexibility while editing. I'm too used to uploading 2K/4K 60fps on my main channel, being a gamer doesn't help I guess, I'm too used to seeing 60fps. But that's where the Sony AS30 catches my attention. I do have enough for one of those however I'm not sure if it's due to the export settings used by the creators, but when mounted on a helmet or when simply moving at speed I can't see any details. Also the mounting system just isn't my thing... No worries, I'm just going to continue saving for a Drift :)
 
No offense or anything, but I think you're setting your standards too high for the beginning... start out low and dare to grow ;) .....

(I still have a Sony AS-10 that i started out with and I have no real complaints ;) ... maybe someday down the road I'll get an upgrade but for now, it's all good :) .....)

None taken :) - High standards is what I'm used to. I guess starting out low can be the best way to go. One day I'd like to look back how I've grown I guess.
 
I personally love the GoPro since it has so many uses and great support. When it is mounted on the chin it doesn't get in the way or get caught in the wind. In the side of the helmet it could be an issue though. You can probably find GoPros used for cheap.

Here is my setup, don't mind the massive amount of cord...I didn't know the ATR3350 had such a long cord when I bought it on eBay.

To be honest I do actually really like the chin mounted view, RidingWithTom is to blame for that. I have had a look for Hero 3+'s but they seem to go for far more than I've seen any Drift Ghost S go for.

And I feel your pain with the long cord. I use a Boya BY-M1 which I'm pretty sure is a clone of the mic you've got... The cord goes on for MILES.
 
Personally I think asking for donations is like begging. If something bad has happened to you and you ask for money to survive, asking for money is absolutely okay, but for a new camera? No offense, but an action camera is a pure luxury toy and you shouldn't ask for money to get one. I guess you wouldn't ask strangers for money to get a new iPhone, would you?
Btw. I'm also still a student at university and everything I own (my car, my bike, my camera, ...) I purchased with my own money, never asked someone for it. I don't come from a rich family, I just worked for it. You will also appreciate the camera much more, when you've worked for it!

You were able to save up for your bike, insurance, and gear. Save up just a little longer and buy a camera. There are many knockoffs for cheap you could buy, but I wouldn't really bother with those. Honestly, donations won't work unless you have a large following. Maybe ask your family for a loan.

Family helped with the bike and insurance. But guys, I have great news...

I WON AN AUCTION ON EBAY. GOT MYSELF A DRIFT GHOST S FOR £134... LIFE IS GOOD :D :D :D
