Keeping Viewers Watching

Okay so I'm a rookie Motovlogger and so far I've posted 9 videos and 6 vlogs. What I've noticed thus far is the longer your video is.. the less views and less audience retention you have. I feel like my topics are good, and I deliver entertaining content. But I feel its not enough.. my goal is to be new and creative seeing as there are tons of new motovloggers making their start everyday. So now my idea that I want to get some feedback on. My average vlog duration is about 10-11 minutes, I'm wanting to cut that down to between 5-6 minutes that includes a 30 second cinema quality intro (3rd person video on action like scenes of me on my bike.) Now it will take some time to make that of course, BUT my question is would this make any of you guys more likely to watch the entire video?
 
Yep, people only have so much time in the day... so the smaller a vlog is, the more likely someone is able to squeeze it in-between something or watch more than one in one day. Just my two cents ;) ...

Also, I'd cut your intro down to 15 seconds... the longer an intro is, the more a person asks "Why?" Short and to the point is nice ;) .

Hope my two cents makes some sense a bit :p ~.....
 
My intro is 10s, but I sometimes pull it back to 7s. I don't think it seems long though, 30s would be a long intro, what are you planning to have?
But I think aiming to keep a vid shorter is better, particularly if you overrun.
 
I'm not 100% sure yet, I have some ideas i'm playing around with. I think I'll have someone filming me from in the bed of my truck (all in a secluded area) and have shots of me speeding up to it. I also want to practice wheelies so i can have one of those in the video.
 
I've always heard that an intro should stay around 7sec but no more than 10sec to be effective. Any longer is said to discourage viewers.

Aside from that I am fairly new as well and I think it just takes time to get yourself noticed. You have to find your niche. Also I've noticed networking with others helps to get you out there as well.
 
If you want people o watch, crashing your bike is a good way to get them in. Don't really recommend it though, it can hurt...

Tell me about it haha. I uploaded my crash about 4 years ago when I was hit by a drunk driver and it shot up to nearly 400k views. Went sort of viral and was featured on a caught on camera tv show and I was even contacted by a few national motorcycle clubs wanting to donate to help me buy a new bike.

I don't use that stuff anymore as I don't want to be known for that and in case you are wondering I never accepted any donation as I told everyone to donate money to people whom really need it more than I do.
 
I think it was said somewhere else that unless your intro is funny I keep it around 5sec. I used to have a long one and noticed my audience retention go up some when I shortened it. Second, keep the video somewhat short. Every once in a while put out a long one but try and put out a few 5min or lest ones more frequently. This is something I have been working on. Make sure to have some sort of call to action through out the video like "what do you guys think, let me know in the comments.". While I am no expert at all I try and watch the bigger motovlogs and key off some of the things they do. Good luck!
 
I don't like the whole call to action stuff, it seems a little pretentious to me.

If people like/hate the video they're thumbs up/down, if they like a couple of your videos they'll subscribe, if they have a question/comment they'll mention it.

The only time I don't mind them is if the whole video was about a debate/specific question, and the author is encouraging the viewers to continue the discussion.
 
all good points, and thanks for the input on the intro guys. I actually did a call to action on my latest video.. but no one has seen it because its at the end of the video..
 
yeah im a newb on my 4th vid and my thoughts instantly was to keep it short while im still learning so iv aimed for around 10mins but i do notice some other channels are at around 6mins which i don't think i could fit everything in that i want to portray in my vlogs, it would prove to be very difficult and some harsh cut out editing to get it that short i reckon
 
I've found that cutting down to around 6min is easier than you think. Have a topic and just spit it out. If you have a lot to talk about then split into multiple vids. Length is really only a problem I find if I'm trying to just randomly talk or improvise. When you do that then it is hard to cut because you're all over the place.
 
Sometimes the call to action is ok when it's a good topic, but when it's really cheesy, like "Let me know what flavor of toothpaste you like?"... then (no offense) sometimes I roll my eyes :p . Just a thought ;) .....

yep the all over the place thing i can relate to haha good advise ill give it a go on a up coming vlog,,, actually pre plan a topic and see how it goes
