Happy Australia Day

Australia Day is on January 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australiansto come together to celebrate their country and culture.

Thanks Mr Fish and all you other foreigners. Its BBQ day with the family. I guess the kids get drunk (as they do at any opportunity), but to most people its a public holiday. Like Thanks giving or Columbus day in the USA or May day in the UK.

I only just learned (on Australia day actually) that in the USA the school year goes right through Christmas and the only break is Spring break which is 12 weeks long! WTF? We have 2 weeks off in April, July, October and 6 weeks off at Christmas. I assume the UK is the same as us? (since we are a British colony)

I'm not sure May Day is a national holiday in the sense something happebs, it's just a day off work. The "drinking" national holiday is NYE and recover on New Years Day.

Thats exactly what Australia day is... just a day off work.
There might be a parade somewhere by someone.

I'm trying to make sense of what you meant here :p . In the U.S., every school district sets their own school calendar (at least that's what they do here in Nebraska - I think the policy pretty universal around the country), so usually breaks and school days vary from district. Some schools operate are year around but most are in session during the fall, winter and spring.

Here in my city, there are three to four days off for Thanksgiving (called fall break), two weeks off for Christmas/New Years, and a week off around Easter (called spring break). There are also a few more days off here and there...

You can see this year's calendar here:

...btw, Columbus Day is pretty much a non-holiday here in the U.S. ;) :.....

Ok, what I was told may have been an exaggeration?
It looks like you have 1 week in March, 2 weeks in december and 11 weeks may to august. While we have 2 week chunks as I said above with a bit longer in January. Is your school year July to June?

I just had a guess about May day and Columbus day. Basically Australia day sounds similar. We also have Queens Birthday, Anzac Day, Labour Day, Family Day, Picnic Day, Show Day, Cup Day, WA Day, Proclomation Day, Eight Hours Day, Recreation Day, May Day and a few other state specific ones. Basically we try not to work at all.

Ah, when you say spring break, you actually mean summer break... got it :D .

Wasn't too convincing ~_~ .....

...summer break isn't considered part of the school year, so the school year actually runs from Aug. to May :) ;) .
