Contour roam external mic mod question

I have a contour roam and thinking about doing the external mic mod but does anyone know if I could just solder a 3.5mm jack to it instead. I would just drill a hole out the bottom of it like the roam+2 has

I've not done it, as I have a +2. Firstly I would got down to your local electronics shop and find out how long the connector is, it might me to long to mount inside the shell. you might be able to get an external plug mounted to the outside of the shell.

There is a video on youtube of a guy making making this mod, but using a mic rather then a connector.

Madmaxxchaz did a decent guide on hardwiring to the contour.

He's been using it for the last year at least

You don't need to use a standard 3.5mm audio connector because it's huge, you can use a 2.5mm or anything smaller. I don't know the connectors on that camera but you can even re-purpose existing ones to fit a mic. I used the USB connector on a Liq camera to hook up an external mic.
I'm 90% sure the contour has a 10 pin USB connector, maybe there is some AV I/O there already.

the link is a step by step on how to do the mic input jack. on a side not if you dont feel comfortable taking the board out and doing it that way you can peel the white sealant over and gently pull some more wire out that way.

.

mic mod

almost there

.

I tested with a 3.5mm mic jack and it works just have to figure out the best way to run through shell of camera.

hopefully will have a test video sometime tomorrow

I soldered a mic on a ROAM, but I don't think you will be able to fit a jack inside the housing. :( But you could just have a short lead sticking out with the jack, which would make taking it off your helmet easier.

yeah. I thought about drilling out the front of the case where the mic was or run it out the side and Velcro it to the side of the case.

I got the microphone jack soldered to the wires and it works. I ran the jack through the side of the camera. Had to drill out a little but does not affect mounting to helmet

so its been awhile since I done the 3.0mm mic jack mod. I first had it routed out through the side where it would mount. Eventually the positive/red wire tore not from the solder point but I think from unplugging the mic and wind from riding. I am currently working on moving the mic jack to hopefully a better position.

Unless I give in and grab another camera this may be the way to go. Wind noise in my videos is annoying :-(

sadly, some of us dont have the funds :(

my first gopro was a hack job, thinking of giving up with my drift hd and going roam 2... $133 including shipping... compared to what drift/gopro charge

Sometimes a second hand set up can be got for the cost of trying to fudge a new cheap one to work, and then finding it doesn't work how you wanted it to.

yeah for the most part its a money thing for me as well but I'd rather utilize something I already have. I could have just done the direct mic but I also use my contour when I fly and I paid good money for a splitter to record audio to a digital recorder. I was doing this with riding as well but could never sync the audio video 100% together

This is true. its how i got my drift, Bought off a mate,
Sadly the quality isnt as good as i want

on side note the battery in contour is removable by plugs. I thought it was solder directly in the board since a contour rep told me they were not replaceable. I will post pics later whenever my stats let me
