First thing in the morning for me, but that's mainly because of how much fog we have here!

Not sure if this is what you're asking, but I have read before that almost all studies done show most accidents fatal or not occur in the evening, between like 5-7 pm. I think it's to do with rush hour traffic and people rushing home after work. Personally I love riding in the morning (when the rush hour dies down) on a relatively empty road.

Had not quite thought of it around those points...good call, I was more along the personal preference route... I guess there are many factors which would influence this, I.e day of the week.

well for me the evening is about 9-11pm and At night people don't give a shit about speed limits, plus visibility is low, cyclists don't always were high-vis and lights. The whole act is a nightmare. Riding at 5-6 is a nightmare when the kids are out playing close to the road

The worst time is right before the sun goes down, on that time that is just INTO your eyes, no matter if you are in a car or riding a motorcycle, you cannot see anything.
In my city this is particularly bad because there's a long stretch of road that goes east-west and it's the main access to anything here, with the sun right on the spot that won't allow you to see anything in the afternoon. That and kids leaving school, the huge amount of parents parking their car wherever to pick up their kids, the school buses jamming up traffic and everything.
Another bad time here is when certain class of people need to go work, they move in motorcycles and they go in packs of 10~40. They're absolute danger because they don't respect any traffic law. They run red lights, they don't indicate turns and go around swerving without any warning. I'd rather ride trough a bunch of cars instead of between these people. I started going to work early to not meet them. They're on the street at about 07.45.

You make a good point, Sun in the eyes is a pain, even with a visor! But I get both in morning and evening

I find I have to have a tinted visor plus my internal visor in those situations.
It's such a pain to swap the visor out 30 minutes later once the sun sets.

I find it is definitely the mornings, too many people still half asleep in a zombie like state...or the nobbers who just have to catch up with their emails while driving...
The evening is generally better because not everybody leaves London at the same time so bit more room for filtering

Do you have a different shield for night riding?

I have the transparent one that came with the helmet and a mirror tinted shield. I'd change them for night riding but I have no place to carry the spare shield. And the transparent one changes the style of the helmet so much that I never use it.
People asked me why I changed helmets when I forgot to put back the mirror shield after a night ride.

In Australia, statistics say very early in the mornings are were most fatalities occur.
