Squidding

Alright, I know how bad squidding is, and I do not condone it or anything,

However, I live in adelaide, and it's mid 40's this week, up to 46 degrees. Which is measured in the shade, so we're talking like 55-60 degrees actually out in the sun. Which is like 140 f.
I'm trying to weigh up the dangers... i'll lose my skin if I crash.. but i'll more than likely pass out from heat-exhaustion and die if I wear gear.

#firstworldproblems

Get a lightweight jacket? It was that hot here last week and I still wore my gear cause its just not worth it. I came off my bike month ago and wont risk it.
In saying that I do ride around town without my jacket on but never any distance.

you could always try a lightweight jacked like the Icon Hooligan Jerseys or at a minimum look at armour that can strap on under regular clothes.

Ill go hoody, jeans, vans and open faced helmet if I'm say nipping out to the shops but like you said not over dramatic distances.

Im ALLWAYS in gear, a minimum is Draggin Jeans, but ALLWAYS in a leather jacket!!

Yesterday 43c (Melb), went to city and back, see a mates new 'Can Hardley'. Yes was friggn hot, Asphalt was radiating SOOOO much heat off it.
But theirs way too many Retards in cages that cant drive!!

Broken bones heal, Skin Grafts HURT LIKE FLICK!!!

I feel where you're coming from. What you have to say to yourself is "Is the risk worth the reward? Can I live with the consequences?" For me it's always no. I'm not the handsomest of guys but coming off without gear is hardly going to improve my modelling career. And as pointed out, it's going to hurt like hell.

I work in the ER at a trauma center. I've seen the aftermath of riding without skin protection. Sometimes they go to the burn unit because they are essentially a burn victim. It's not a place I'd ever want to go. Those wounds have to be scrubbed clean at least daily. People are awake and conscious when those nurses have to get in there and scrub. Even after all I've seen, thinking about scrubbing those wounds still gives me the heebie jeebies. There's also skin grafts, exposed bones, etc.

At least find some good mesh gear. It gets over 100F where I live with plenty of humidity. I have olympia gear and it breathes really well. You can wear shorts under the pants and, as long as you're moving, it feels pretty close to what you'd feel without the pants. The jacket breathes really well too. Of course, there's nothing you can do about the temperature of the air. You still feel like you're riding into a blow dryer.
Drink plenty of water, wear light colored and breathable gear. If it's too hot then it's just too hot.

There is a thread on Reddit about burn scrubbing and I can say, I wish I'd never seen it

"If its too hot for gear, its too hot to ride" is the moto ive heard and live by.
On the other end, its never too cold for gear.

Its strange... how much does it cost the state if a motorcyclist crashes and smashes his head and dies? How much does it cost if he slides down the road and he's in hospital and off work for months getting skin grafts? And yet helmets are a legal requirement but protective clothing isnt? I think its the wrong way around.

I totally get what you're saying. And I would assume there is some kind of monetary cost to running someone over in a vehicle which causes them to be killed. But I guess the helmet being the requirement means they are looking out for us rather than the insurance companies. If it was the other way round we would wonder why helmets weren't the legal requirement as our lives were at stake.

I think the biggest thing with it though is that it's down to the rider to understand the consequences should he come off the bike. Maybe they should better educate us on the pitfalls of riding without gear when we take our tests. Personally I've watched 'No Prisoners 2013' on YouTube which is more than enough reason for me!

Here in Texas, helmets aren't a requirement if you're over 20 years old. I think it should be your choice to wear gear despite the fact that I think people should wear gear. It's not my business to force them. However, a responsible person would have financial coverage should something bad happen and it's their fault. When you can't pay, it's unfair to hospitals (and other paying patients who are essentially covering the costs of people who can't pay) that treat you for a serious brain injury or for severe abrasions requiring skin grafts because you were doing wheelies at 100 mph and fell.
It's the cost of free choice which, if everyone were responsible adults, shouldn't cost us.

I haven't seen the "No Prisoners 2013". I'll have to watch it.

Visiting my brother in Hospital, 3different accidents, Their was ALLWAYS a guy in the next bed with Gravel Rash.
The stories STILL make me shivver.

Worn gear ever since!! No Matter the heat!

I'm only 8 minutes in. There's a guy on a bike at what looks like a gas station. He's not going fast but just kind of flops over. It almost looks like he passed out prior to going down because he didn't put his hands out or anything.
Anyway, he hits his head pretty hard. Nobody comes to his aid but you start to see some seizure activity. Then he starts to posture which is something that happens with severe brain trauma. He wasn't going very fast either. Just the distance from sitting on the bike to the ground did it. Probably just "running down to the store to fill up". If he didn't get surgery soon, he died. :(

That's an important lesson.

This just happened to my friend yesterday:

The last few times I've rode with him, he didn't wear a jacket but fortunately for him, he did this time and it saved his skin. Although if you look at 0:42, his knee lands first which resulted in a really bad road rash. He was only wearing jeans. We were only going about 35mph and his knee didn't look so good. His jacket and gloves was a bit torn up also with some scratches on his hands.

I'd say after seeing this personally, I'd say it is better to sweat than bleed.

If OP is worried about heat exhaustion, it is probably better to invest in a camelbak for water. They also make electrolyte tablets for them which will help while sweating.

I think they're aren't enough people taking this stuff seriously. It's always refreshing to meet people who do.

I would always recommend to any fellow rider to wear a jacket, kevlar jeans and proper riding boots at a MINIMUM. I learnt my lesson when I came off my old Aprilia RS 125 by not wearing boots. I got trainer fabric burn and asphalt burn on same foot which killed. I was travelling at 15 MPH tops while braking the front slid out. Even at 15mph I was off work for 3 weeks. Couldn't walk for a week. Thinking back, should be lazy or complain about the weather and put on appropriate clothes!

IREV808 - in your video you appear to be about 2 seconds behind your mate and not travelling that fast yet couldn't stop before going past him. Is that right or did you know he wasn't going to step out directly in front of you so you stopped slower? Just some questions - not having a go - as it seems an interesting lesson on braking distance too.

I was afraid he was going to tumble towards my intended swerve. I admit, I had a bit of target fixation when he was tumbling towards me and I should of swerved more. There was also someone who I have never rode with before following close behind me so I was nervous he was going to rear end me. It was kinda annoying that he was close to me and I kept that in mind while trying to swerve instead of braking.

not saying any of you "hate" on people who dont wear enough gear but i dont understand the hate for it at all, it is more dangerous to ride without gear the same way its more dangerous to ride a motorcycle instead of a car, it dont bother me one way or the other if someone has a tshirt on or a $300 jacket- just wanted to put that out there

I'd have to agree. It's a personal choice, a choice I'd sooner be geared up
