We all watch motovloggers. We probably all sometimes think "I would have done this differently" or "I wish this person had done/would do___ instead of doing ___."

Maybe by calling out some of the motovloggers we like and what we wish they did differently, we'll both:
a) Learn about some lesser known people we might be interested in checking out
b) Learn some ways to make our own content better

Proposed format:

Motovlogger I love/hate:
Why I love/hate them:
What I wish they would change:

Motovlogger I love/hate: GoRUFFLY

Why I love/hate them: Couple raveling around the world on two different motorcycles, with their freakin dog on the bike!! Also the missus rides the same bike as me so you know they're cool AF.

What I wish they would change:
Making the videos shorter.

We've got a blonde haired bright eyed woman traveling the world by motorcycle. Sounds like the recipe for a million subscribers in 4 years am I right? The issue I'm having is, as much as I love these guys, I can't watch their stuff anymore because their videos have ballooned to 20-35 minutes.

I wish their videos were shorter because I think in Itchy's early stuff you have the blueprint for how to grow a travel motorcycle world tour channel. If you're already doing the riding, just follow the recipe. I want that same success for them, but I feel like the long videos are hurting them by not having the mass-appeal that all of Noraly's early short videos had.

There are a few channels I watch where I am quite happy to sit through 30, 40, 50 minute videos from them, others I'll not watch more than 10min. As long as they are engaging for the length of the video, I hardly notice the length. If it is long because it is fluff and just music with no words being spoken, I'll get turned off very quickly though.

Yup. I just can't do

For sure. Because it sounds like you're already interested in those channels. There's an established relationship there. It might be harder if you hadn't seen them before to get you to want to give them a shot if the next video down is an 11 minute alternative.

The other day I watched an hour long review of why someone hates their Royal Enfield the other day just because I found the systematic break down of each component really well done.

But that's probably the first time in a long time I've watched an hour long video from someone I didn't already know and have interest in.

I also can't get that kind of breakdown of a motorcycle from the mainstream media.

However, Discovery Channel, the BBC, etc, do a ton of adventure and exploration kind of content. So if you're going to compete foan audience's time in that niche, you're giving yourself stiff competition at the 30 minute mark.

The thing is, I like to respect the artist/creators choice, and how they edit a video, be it long or short form is none of my business, and if I chose to watch their video and enjoy it, AWESOME... if I don't and it is the first time I have discovered their channel, I'll probs not watch their stuff again unless there is a vested reason to do so. If they change from doing videos I liked as an established format from them to one I didn't, I'd just not watch the videos they make that don't suit my viewing needs.
We could dissect each others content in here, but if we were to do so without being asked, this place would become very toxic, and isn't what this forum is about (if they ask for feedback on a video, that is different). I think we should also try to respect other channels who are not members on here so as to not discourage new channels from joining, and this forum also has a lot of members who just read the threads but don't post, so I would again, not find it wise or useful to "name and shame" channels who might not enjoy that sort of unsolicited feedback.

Ouuf, I wasn't out to name and shame at all...

I can say I wish a chef used more or less of an ingredient, or Da Vinci used more bright colors in the Mona Lisa... It doesn't mean I'm out to shame someone who can outcook me or in Da Vinci's case probably out-anything me. Nor does it mean I don't "respect the artist/creators choice" - it just means I like a different set of ingredients. That's not a negative. It's just taste, it's subjective.

I was looking for another way of helping people share and learn what could be done differently to get some discussion going. Because yes, there are places to request feedback, but when I have asked for feedback I got none whatsoever, so I thought "Ok, if people don't want to give me feedback directly, maybe this might be a different way of helping me and others learn."

I see your point though about it might not be nice for other channels to come here and then see they were already discussed or critiqued, so fair enough, maybe this wasn't the best idea. Feel free to lock it up.

I can say from my experience giving feedback or just input that it can be very tricky. For example, most leadership training is reward in public and punish in private. Granted feedback should not be used to punish however in communication the message can change from sender to receiver even if the words do not change at all.

So I reach out to someone on a one on one level of communication if I think they are receptive. Most of time it just words of encouragement of what was helpful or enjoyable.

There is one exception though. If a content creator is on a path that self-destructive and I have had already established an open exchange of ideas with them. Then I might not necessarily call them out on the behavior but rather give them my experience with the end results of that behavior.

Again, it is one on one.

I like the overall concept of the thread if the concept is of a method or style that works well or something that is a faux pas. That might be a thread started WITHOUT tying a name to it. Again if the point is to talk of style vs. the person.

But we will run into a problem. Not everyone is 100% like everyone else it could devolve into tangents.

Not an easy thread topic is it?

I see what we do on the forum like a coffee shop of starving artists. Imagine having rookie Picasso, Oliver Stone, Mozart, Worhol, and etc all hanging out talking about style at the same time. That would get nuts.

I like R-Rated's approach - one-on-one. No need to air "dirty laundry" so to speak. If you've got constructive criticism, best left to a more intimate setting like DMs or IG or whatever, not a public comment. That's how trolls are born - it doesn't take long to escalate.

I look at my stats to determine if the vids are going in the right direction or not, whether it be length/content/editing/etc.

I also suggest a "buddy system" of sorts. @Dewey316 and I communicate regularly and critique each others' work, both before and after publishing. We've agreed to be brutally honest with each other, and neither takes it personally when criticisms are leveled at the other - we look at it as a way to improve. Then again, we have the aforementioned rapport with each other, so it makes it easy.

The buddy system works really well. Honestly, we all get to tied to our ideas and hang on to them. The stuff @Drakhen99 has helped me in, are things I wouldn't have tried, or wouldn't have cut without him being honest. And I know that even when he gets tired of me telling him a couple of things (like ZOOM in on the thumbnail!) , He has gotten good results from having someone's else critique things.

It's off topic from the original post, but it can be really helpful to have someone who's opinion you trust, tell you there are things you can change and do better on.

To be fair, I don't have anyone else critique my work. I take @Dewey316 's advice, repetitive as it may be [ZOOM IN ALREADY!] and make a judgement call from there. Out of my close friends, he's the only one who also creates content, so there's nobody else to ask [not to belittle his input].

Maybe there's no one else who matches your skill level then, and feels they could provide an input :p
LOL, no, I worded that incorrectly - I don't have anyone else critique my vids besides Dewey.

My girlfriend critiques every video I make and I've instructed her to NOT hold back either. And she doesn't, sometimes she is brutal! o_O

She does raise good points though, and I've made changes along the way due to her advice and I feel it has improved my content.

I wouldn't publicly critique another motovlogger's work because I don't feel that would be very polite. On the other hand I have zero problems with anyone at all critiquing my own videos, so if anyone here wants to point out ways my motovlogs suck or how I could improve things then blast away! Please! :D

Your GF watches your vids? My wife only watches mine if I ask nicely. She'll give feedback sometimes, but mostly she just watches them like once a month.

Seconded.

Somehow my wife finds being with me and then watching me just too much me sometimes.

I guess girlfriends are different for some reason?;)

Yeah, my wife is like "I hear you editing videos, I talk to you daily, I don't need to watch your vids."

If I say, "Hey honey, I gave you a shout-out in this one," then she'll watch.
