People making shorts from your material - would you be happy?

Apparently YouTube has set it up so every video you upload, you specifically need to untick 'allow anyone to use my material' (or words to that effect).

Also there is no way of doing this as a channel wide selection it must be done on each and every video individually. (clearly YT wants people to stay 'opted in' to this stupidity.

The practical upshot of this is that f you don't do this for every video (including existing ones) then any person could download your videos, cut them up to make YT #shorts and make money from them. Oh and neither they nor YT would pay you anything at all.

Super dodgy I reckon.

Thanks... now I have something I need to do tomorrow night - make sure my videos don't have that checkbox!

After all the time & effort I put into my videos, I do NOT want someone to be able to cut 'em up and post them as their own.

I actually noticed this on Monday night when uploading the third video to channel, but because my channel is in its infancy, I thought it was simply just a setting I had overlooked when uploading videos previously! I made sure to tick it!

Am not really sure my content would be of any interest to many folk making shorts, or tik-tok vids. It also isn't exactly difficult for folk to rip videos either as can be seen on instagram where using other people's content is rife. It does annoy me that we can lose all monetisation on a vid that had 5 seconds of music as a car drove by blaring it out completely unintentionally, but on the flip side, YT will happily let folk take our content with a stealth button.

Currently, I am not bothered with it as I don't think I make content that would be clipped, and if it did, it would more than likely be a subscriber doing so.

From the YT help page, it said that only India and the USA have the YT Shorts thing anyway, and it is still in beta.

Actually he asks people to submit the videos and asks you to give the authorization to use the material. It clearly states, that you need to be the owner\creator of the video, in order to submit.

I don't think the goal of shorts is to generate income more like using it to get subs or traffic flow towards your channel. However why would other people sample your content to attract view/traffic to their site is beyond me.

Yeh however using our own footage is surely more creative. Creators are what makes YouTube what it is and the skill to make our own footage watchable is what it's all about for me.

It was a pain in the A, but I un-checked all the permission boxes on my videos. I wonder if this blocks clip converter programs that are used to download shorts? Not sure how the copyright laws are in other countries, but if anyone in the US wants to be fully protective of their content they can file for a Copyright certificate (though it will cost money).

If a YT-er is profiting from a monetized site then an account can be set up with the US Copyright Office through the Library of Congress where 'X' amount of money is deposited and then withdrawn to cover the price of any copyright registered. You can also bundle all of one's videos together and register them all under a single copyright instead of one for each video, but you may have to place them in a few (long content) videos together to make an anthology of work.

I don't know, I think I'd be okay if someone used clips from my videos? I mean wouldn't that be some nice free advertising for my channel if they did?

My gut feeling is I'm not too concerned about this. Is that wrong?

My thoughts are if someone used part of your video without permission on a monetized channel that had a high viewership for that video, then shouldn't part of the revenue go to you?

Yep - you did the work, you get credit [revenue] for that work!

IIRC, Shadetree Surgeon had a video on his channel where someone wrecked their car, SS dropped his bike, and people snatched that clip, removed his watermark, and posted it on their own channels, where it got many more views than his original video did... and he was kinda miffed at it a little while later in another video.

Is there an action a channel owner can take through YouTube if there is content theft? Stealing is stealing, and I would have YouTube remove the video until the person pays for the content they took.

I'm not sure, but there ought to be. It's probably a copyright claim you can make through YT.

Good point. In the US all works are automatically protected by the Copyright laws, but proving ownership requires having a copyright certificate, which (mindbogglingly) cost more money than the original $5 fee of a few decades ago.

Interesting... I didn't know that. I remember it being $5, but you're right, that was a long time ago. I figured that whatever you made and put on YT was covered somehow.

if you don't want folk using your clips, check the box. I really don't think it will be an issue on 99% of your videos, but if you have a video with a 30 second clip that may be viral material, just check the box on that vid. It won't stop people robbing it, but it will stop YT allowing them to grab it through the YT app

Yes you are right. That was an amazing clip and it wasn't long afterward that it appeared on just about every traffic / motorcycle compilation channel on youtube. Clips like that drive traffic (no pun intended) to the compilation channels NOT to the original source, unfortunately.
