Recording voice while riding

Hello everyone, I ride a 2017 Classic 500 with a up-bend pipe, love the sound wicked loud. So loud that when I try to do some voice recording with a Tascam Dr-05X, the muffler sound still drones out the voice. The mic is set inside the helmet directly in front. The Sena intercom system sound is clear. Any thoughts as to getting a better voice sound from the Tascam?

I used Grand Lavalier Lapel Microphone and its sound quality is pretty much decent and the price is cheap too.
The Sena intercom system sound is good too.

Is that one used for recording ? Sorry my dad asked me to ask the question lol we the Sena for talking between us but he has a secondary mic inside for recording but it seems janky when we listen to it later on

If youre using a Tascam, you should be able to adjust the gain of the mic, lower it basically to the point where the mic picks up less outside noise.

I'm doing the same with a Zoom H1N recorder and found the quality much better, compared to wiring the mic directly into a camera/gopro.

I tested out a different approach on my last ride and it worked out REALLY well. I have a slave SmartPack communicator that is connected into the mesh, this communicator's only job is to send the audio to my Tascam DR-05. The SmartPack takes care of most of the noise, and I have nothing hanging off of my helmet like those bulky GoPro adapters. The bonus is everyone's audio can get cleaned up in editing, whereas recording the vlogger separately from the the rider comms is an extra step.

I used a broken helmet mount for the SmartPack, and added the audio connector. A little tinkering with the audio levels, and voila!

So you connect your helmet comms unit to that comms unit, which I assume goes in your pocket with the Tascam? And that picks up your audio as well as everyone elses audio that is connected, and just saves it direct to the Tascam.... That is quite awesome, and possibly something I could try too as a solo rider as I have built in Sena in my Schuberth and also have a Sena I am not using from my old helmet.... hmmm, awesome stuff, ty :-)

Very interesting setup you got there.
