Bigots crawled out of the woodwork when companies showed support of Black Live Matter. Now that it is time for LGBTQ Pride, the keyboard warriors are out in force...

It is interesting from sociology point of view though disappointing.

Not really, it's Facebook. What do you expect when you give people with nothing better to do with their life a portal where they think they're important?

As an ex Harley rider, I can tell you there are many HD loyalists who are bigoted and racist. Many will only ever buy a Harley and think riding any other brand is traitorous to America and its values. It's a part of the HD culture of old which has survived to this day. It will fade in time just as those same tendencies are fading in society, but slowly for certain.

I do give props to the MOCO for at least making the attempt to bend those "traditions". They knew they would tick off part of their customer base by doing so but they still made the effort, so kudos to them.

Today H-D posted this on Facebook after an investigation in response to folks reporting the owner of Abernathy H-D for making racists comments...

Interesting to see the comments and folks profiles making them

So its OK to sell bikes to the criminal underworld but its not OK to be racist?

I really don't know where the world is heading now days. Here we have had some very iconic foods renamed because they might sound racist. There is also a case of a car owner having his rego cancelled because the personalized plates that he has had for many years might incite violence.

I think give it 12 months of this attitude and you wont be able to name anything you will just have to point and grunt. Guess were headed back to the caveman era.

Harley is absolutely bleeding. All this recent 'try to appeal to EVERY market segment' is entirely about trying to grab some profit from the mess.

Someone would have to be pretty naïve to think its for any higher social purpose.

For those interested in Harleys financial situation have a look at the recent video on the subject on FortNine channel.

Hells Angels, Rebels, Odin's Warriors etc. Not sure what they might be called where you are - here its OMCG ("outlaw motorcycle gang"). Essentially the 1% ers. We have quiet extensive anti association laws, bans on wearing club colours etc etc.

Back in the day at it used to be common to see these fellas out and about (I used to go to the Odin's Warriors bike show at Oxley every year) but even before all these new anti association laws came in it was actually pretty rare to see them. Most drive BMWs and expensive sports cars most of the time, rather than ride.

Actually in parts of Australia it does.

Erm... I live here too and know several MC members that are not criminals.

The criminals don't ride motorcycles (not while wearing a cut anyway), as nothing says "pull me over" quicker.

No anti-association laws here in the South and quite common to see Rebels and Comancheros going about their days, quite legally.

TBH, it would not make for good "business" to be in an Outlaw anything and to have a public/prominent profile. Most of their members try to stay low key so as to not give Johnny Law probable cause.

Of course every organization has that one "employee" who just can't keep from f'ing it up for everyone else. That is why only the "dumb" crooks get caught most often.

So we see Johnny Law assume the us vs. them mentality and write off nearly any rider as part of the them.

So, Harley has contracts with Criminal Organizations for fleet leasing? That must be great on one hand with maintainence, but hell on the wallet at the end with mileage overage fees because ya know, bikers don't take the shortest route anywhere, even when trying to getaway from robbing a bank.

I own 2 Harleys, so does that mean I'm a criminal in two outlaw clubs? Or does my Suzuki cancel out one Harley?

As for naming stuff, just don't use insensitive, bigoted terms, words or phrases. It really isn't that difficult. Funny how some people can only think backwards when in reality we are taking steps forward, away from the era of bigotry, Colonial Slavery and classism.

Those Iconic foods with 100% racist/bigoted names needed to be changed decades ago, but some people who can't let go of their systemic racist mindsets (what they refer to as heritage but is more appropriately categorized as ”nostalgia") can't fathom that people don't want Colonial/Slave/Bigoted Phrases on their dining room tables. The USA is slowly tackling that problem with brands like Aunt Jamima. Mind you, I don' think anyone should be even consuming crappy corn syrup, just spend the few extra bucks and buy maple syrup.

As for what was on some persons license plate, well it was totally ok to have something that is most likely terrible because they have had it for years, right? The best part is that you didn't type out what it is on the plates because subconsciously you know that it is not appropriate. So, even without knowing what it was, I'm glad he lost his wittle vanity plates that made him feel super cool and superior.

Yeah there are a lot of stupid bigots riding Harleys but I can say for me that I am not one of them. And their effort, be it for profit or social change, is a good sign in my book. They need to make money to stay involved in the dialogue and be a part of the change. And I won’t speak for anyone else, but R-Rated (who is also a Harley rider) seems pretty open minded and welcoming (he can correct me if I am assuming too much). But from some of the comments above it seems bigots ride many brands including Yamahas.

The bleeding is nothing new. Been like that prior to AMF and ever since. People root for an underdog so the MOCO is not going to discard that easily.

However, cleaning house is overdue in some places and so we see folks demand change and the company respond appropriately.

You nailed it!

I am very open minded and know there are very few pure good or pure evil poeple left anywhere so I try to give everyone a couple of chances.

Unfortunately the dealership H-D cut off was owned by someone who continued to tip the scales towards bad things and was not shy about it. Harley was not the only one that pulled their franchise from them. Polaris and Honda also did some of their own investigating and found out enough information to pull their names away as well.
