I have a 2 part video (maybe 3) of a whole trip the wife and I took earlier this year. Its a lot of scenery and is mainly filmed by my wife, so its all over my shoulder and some panning shots, showing off mountains and views.

My question is on these long trip videos should I have some voiceover commentary in certain sections, maybe to explain where we are? or keep it as is and language agnostic?

I think folk would find it more interesting if you cut it down to highlights and did a commentary! :)

Solid advice, I've basically already made the long videos and I'll still upload them. However I reckon a 2-3 minute highlight video with commentary about the area and maybe riding motorcycles in the area (of which there is plenty to say, one of those "biker friendly" areas).

From what little experience I have general audience retention is better on highlight reel type video more than whole trip day length videos.

A decent soundtrack that suits the visuals and the occasional bit of "here we are at..." or "later that day we" works quite well.

Different channels do different things... Ultimately it comes down to what you want to do, what you want your channel to be and what your target and loyal audience want.

I second HippoDrone - highlights with commentary for the main video. But you can alsways upload the raw, unedited video as well to see if people want to watch it. I sometimes like to just watch a long voyage, with no commentary, just the sound of the bike, usually in the dead of winter when there is too much ice and snow on the ground for me to even get the bike out of the yard.

I'll defnitely upload some of the raw footage as I also like to watch a long voyage with just bike noise!

You can do a shorter highlights reel with a card to the longer version if you wish. Maybe even set the cards to pop into the long version at the same location. For example - highlight shows some cool town and ice cream the card pops up that would take the viewer to the point in the long version where you are riding around looking at the town.

Just an idea I have always wanted to try.

Will definitely use that! If someone is watching the highlights and wants to see more of a location, they'll jump right in to the longer video.
