Changing from GoPro to camcorder...any tips

Hi guys,

I realized that after only motovlog #3, that I'm getting lazy. My last two videos have just been me riding to work talking about random subjects. Not exactly exciting stuff. I realized that I'm living in Japan surrounded by interesting places that I should go visit and make the viewing experience actually interesting for the people watching. i.e. going to temples, castles etc.

Next I'm thinking that if I do go to some tourist spots, it would be tricky (and embarrasing) to walk around with my helmet on filming the inside of some ancient buddhist temple, so I want to take a camcorder too and film the insides of these places.

What do you guys reccomend in this case. Do you just speak into your regular motovlogging setup "Now I'm going to walk around the $#&!", won't you guys come with me?" or something similar?

I don't see many people who do this. Any ideas? AND...if for example the ride to the temple or whatever is 5 mins or so, how much walking/camcorder footage is about right?

I have a whole series on castle visits and other "interesting" locations, I just use my GoPro 7 when walking around them, I have tried using a lav mic but it would get snagged on things so I just use the regular camera audio mainly now, it is a pest in the wind but inside is ok.
As for the balance, that is something you'll have to experiment with. My castle vids don't get as many views as my regular motovlogs, but I enjoy them so don't really care. But editing them to a suitable length is really hard as I don't like cutting out the full explore, but you have to be quite harsh I think if you want to maintain the interest of your audience.

I think a lot of it has to do on your target audience, or rather who you want your target audience to be. If you want your focus to be on motorcycles then I would be careful not spend too much time elsewhere. Beach Biker on YT I think does a great job of filming off bike while still maintaining the interest and attention span of his motorcycle viewers.
If you want people to come for non motorcycle related content instead, then you will have to bring something to the table in your non motorcycle content. You are now competing in a different genre in YouTube.
Or you are just a successful enough vlogger that people come for your character and your audience simply just wants to see you vlog no matter the subject of the vlog.

If your video is %50 motorcycles and %50 X, then it will be really hard to maintain the retention of both audiences. I think it's still fine to have for example a video purely about one subject and another video about another on the same channel, just try to keep each video focused on what you want that video to be about.

I totally agree with Hippo an Florida Man, I suggest you to try making a "Trip vlog", giving advice of the rutes, cost of milage, where to eat. local dishes, and manners and only mention the most interesting places in order to acquaint people about the place you´re visiting, so you´ll be still in the motorcycle line cause you´re only discribing a trip and keeping the place in second term. Hope it works for you and sorry for my bad english

You can always wear a chest mount for the GoPro. I wore one through the HD museum and had a mic with it. I used the helmet mount off the ride there and back and the chest for the walking around. Then all my footage was on one device for offloading.

Thanks guys. I think the chest cam might be the easier option... The GoPro 7 is so damn smooth that I might not even need a gimbal, however it's on my wish list. Maybe wait til the summer bonus comes through so the wife doesn't notice such a dent in my salary
Re: question about target audience etc. I just figured it's a waste that I live in such an interesting country, but until now my videos just feature some roads that could be anwhere in the world, and the ride to work could be any city in the world. Some nice old temples and stuff could be interesting to bikers as well as Japanophiles...

Just have fun, man. Shoot what you want to shoot and see what you think of it. You never know until you try it out. I like watching motovloggers that have something unique like what you are saying.

Muchos gracias Mr Gorilla. Ok, I'll make a video just for you. There's some cool temples really close to my house. In fact my area has something like 50 shrines within a 1 mile square....and a Catholic church too beleive it or not.

The funny thing is, I didn't really notice it, but in my city there are a ton of catholic churches. Maybe just this area?! The Japanese mainly use them for throwing fancy weddings. Don't think there are many catholic Japanese people. But some Koreans are, and most of the Phillipinos who live here. Also when I was riding at orange road I noticed a shrine and that was catholic too. Maybe god is sending me a message haha.
