I tend to take a screen grab from my video, then add a .png image of whatever bike I am riding in it and my channel logo, then add some wording/title

I have done my own .png files of some of my bikes, often it is easier to google search for them from the manufacturer as they often use .png files in marketing. The advantage of this file type is that it allows you to put the pic of the bike up on the thumbnail and it doesn't mask the main image as the background is transparent!

Sometimes I pull stills from my videos, sometimes I take photos while I'm out on that particular ride, other times I use product shots of what I am reviewing during the vlog, or sometimes I just simply google what I need and use images with no licensing. More often than not Wikipedia has open source images that need no attribution or give you the necessary attribution when you download the image. Or I will even use only text.

Sometimes I draw them from scratch, but mostly I just do screengrabs from the recording.

Most of the time,
I just use a frame from inside the video I'm uploading.
I'm also using TubeBuddy to help me edit it a bit easier.

To each thumbnail I'm adding my logo, that way all of my videos thumbnail looks a bit distinctive from the rest.
Sometimes I add a logo of the topic (like the Husqvarna logo when I did my new bike reveal, or a cigarette photo when I quit smoking)

I also sometime add some text with my distinctive font and color scheme.

I think that in thumbnail design terms, the "next level" (for me at least)
will be to outline something in particular.

Then TubeBuddy is your buddy! Haha.

It's a chrome extension for YouTube creators.
Really nice and add some nice info and tools.

IMO the free version is good enough,no need to pay for membership
