Expanding Social Media Footprint

Since it's below zero here in Northern Wisconsin, I've been really doing a lot of research and checking out ways to expand the Winkler Motorcycle Adventures name, and I wanted to share some of the things I've done in hopes others may find it helpful or have ideas and input.

The first thing I did was put together my own website. I did a lot of checking around, and I know the basics for coding websites, but I wanted something that really stands out. I ended up settling on creating an account with Wix.com. Their prices are reasonable, and it's so user friendly anyone can build a website (no coding knowledge needed!). I looked into WordPress as well, but it seemed a little more difficult for me to grasp.

Apparel was another big item for us. We like to create t-shirts through Vistaprint, order them in bulk, and sell them to help fund our adventures every year. This was not effective, and we typically ended up losing money actually. We ordered in bulk, so we were trying to estimate how many we would need of each size (wouldn't sell them all because we always ordered a little extra). We also had to track down the people that wanted them, meet up with them, and collect the money which was all time consuming. So, we did some research on this and stumbled across another YouTuber that uses Teespring.com. After playing around a little bit, it's actually a pretty slick website. You can design t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, beach towels, phone cases, etc. and you can select the colors you want to offer. You also get to select how much you want to sell each item for, so you can make a little bit of profit, and then you are given a URL. People then go out to that URL and can buy whatever they would like, they pay Teespring, and at the end of the campaign you can get your payout through PayPal. It's pretty nice, and really took a lot of hassle out of selling t-shirts, and there's no cost to you unlike Vistaprint.

Another thing we decided to do was to get business cards for Winkler Motorcycle Adventures. Since we are trying to really get our name out there and get sponsors for our trip to Alaska and back in 2020, we figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to have business cards with all our social media and contact information. It's also kind of nice when we are traveling and talk to people. We can just give them a card instead of them having to remember our name until they get home or something. I believe they were around $10 or so on Vistaprint for 500 cards, so fairly inexpensive.

Other than that, we currently still have our Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, but we felt that the website could make us look more official or legitimate!

If anyone has any other suggestions or input on expanding a social media footprint, it would be greatly appreciated as well!

Having a website is good.. As for pushing apparels and merchandise it really depends on your demographic if they are keen to get them, otherwise I'd say just be diligent in keep all your social media platforms updated and if you still feel the need to spend money, spend some on promoting your social media, i.e. FB/Insta ads and stuff like that.

Cool idea. I fell as though the shirts, etc might be tough to sell on a large (unknown) scale, but you never know. Social media interaction is free (time) and is arguably the best way to organically grow your digital brand. Be consistent and be relevant. Engage your audience by blogging/vlogging about things people want to read/view.
Safe travels!

Social media interaction is free

It’s not. I hear this all the time in my line of work.

If you spend 3 hours day on social media and your hourly rate is £65.... if you haven’t made £110ph back (ROI) - it’s far from free.

That’s where Facebook nailed the sponsored posts, you can bang up an advert for £1 and because it’s low, people don’t view it as an expense so do another, and another

That’s why I put (time) after the word free. Your time is only worth money if said time would have otherwise been taken up by a paying client. If we are doing the social media interaction on our own time (as most are) then it is free - no revenue lost.
