Why Are The Greats So Great?

I've wondered what's going to happen when the current generation (where most views/subs comes from) start getting older...I wonder how many have a plan for future growth...

I don't think it will change too much. You can't entertain someone forever but there are always new people coming.

I look at the mindcrack guys and they all used to only do minecraft videos and now that the initial hype is slowing down they are all branching out

I'd agree with Joel. I can't stand the vlogs that talk about something completely unrelated to what you're seeing on screen.

You do get some big boys who don't talk at all though, such as Royal Jordainian.

I am worlds more entertained by RJ's talking than the vast majority of big vloggers who seem to be in their early to late 20s. RJ gives an absolutely no-bullshit POV on his topics and is blatantly honest with no sugar-coating. Something you rarely get from the 'fluffers' who seem to love everything all the time.

If someone seems like they're trying way too hard to copy someone else, clearly acting for the camera, or otherwise disingenuous I hit unsub.

IMO, that's why you should never quit your day job, even if you hit the 500k+ mark. Trends change all the time and a single social media controversy can bring everything crashing to a halt. Plus, it makes it easier to just walk away if it stops being fun.

I think the key to success is to put out decent content, be consistent and stick with it.

Pretty much 100% why the big vloggers are so big. They have regular weekly videos and do what comes naturally. It's clear Walter is a bit awkward, but friendly a goofy. Jake is a hooligan hick. The other 'Moto' guys range from down-to-earth family man to KKK-tolerating redneck...

I donno, youtube is a career for some people. If you get a million subs or are just bi, I'd say go with, just have a back up plan

You've had some cool vids like the Mad Max car and the loony in the Prius.

Yeah, that mad max car is AWESOME. I wish I could do more videos with that car. Heck, I wish I could do a full blown review on it. But... I can not pry the keys from the owners hands! And who can blame him! Thanks for the kind words!

It's pretty obvious who makes it a career. They tend to be the people sensationalizing BS and doing stupid crap for views/subs. Just saying that kind of fame is fleeting. Once fads change, what does a YouTube personality with no education and no established career have to fall back on? I seriously doubt Royal Jordanian is doing the vlog thing full-time. IMO, that makes him a lot more interesting.

I don't know about that, at Phillip defranco. that why is supposed to have an unbias "news" show. and yet the entire show is him telling his bias personal opinions and saying that anyone who doesn't agree is an idiot. and even though his channels/Fads are slowing down, it doesn't matter because he has made millions.

Yes I agree there are some people who get some subs and views and some fame for having stupid videos and some that are fads that once they go away they have no careers to fall back on. But some of them know what they are doing. I look at a guy like Spacep0d. sure he isn't the most famous, but he is certainly making some money off youtube. But he is also doing it in a smart way by advertising his own personal businesses.

Philly-D always seemed to be fairly genuine to me. I used to watch him years ago and he seemed down-to-earth and blunt in his opinions with a goofy nerd personality. He's skyrocketed because he's not forcing his presentation. Play to your strengths (nerd, goofy, broad interests, conversationalist). He's also been an extremely active YouTuber from the start with multiple weekly videos for eight years. The fact that he covers anything and everything automatically makes his potential audience gigantic. Meanwhile, motovloggers limit themselves by nature.

I completely agree about motovloggers automatically having a small market. but I have to disagree about PD he started out that way, but as time went on and he got bigger on youtube he started promoting certain lifestyles and rejecting others. crediting certain views and hating on other. sourcefed was the same thing.

Although I donno if this is the place to have an argument or even a talk about that because it's a bit off topic (yes i know I brought it up)

But i'd say because motovlogging is such a small market we should embrace the motovloggers who got big because they are the ones who grow the community the most.

I find the popular ones that I keep going back to I'm actually drawn to the tone of their voice more than anything. Yes they have good content but if I can't stand someones voice then I won't continue to watch it. (much like my own voice I can't stand that)

For me, it's more about the fact that I would rather be riding than sitting on the couch, unless its with my boys. When I am spending time with the family and we are not enjoying the great outdoors, that's when I turn to the motovloggers for entertainment and education. Watching this community and the vids that are produced makes me feel like I am part of it and back on the bike in a way and I like that.

Ridding a bike already puts you in a bit of a cult class, motovlogging is a bit nerdy which seems a more narrow cult class. Its nice to know there are others out there that are into the same things you are and that you are part of it. I have much more respect for popular motovloggers who bring the newbies in with open arms, it shows real character. Motonosity hits that mark and there are plenty of others operating this way as well.

In terms of content, initially I get a good chuckle out of the youngins and their antics but that generally gets old pretty quick. On the same page as kuhlka with that in mind.

I used to like Jakes wheelies. now the shouting and constant backwheeling just makes me think Pewdiepie

I love philly d, he is an awesome youtuber, and yes, it took 8 years to get there. But he did it without really changing.

As for what makes a good motovlogger? I think its just sticking to it and posting vids about what you love. There are others that are interested in back to the future fan fiction for instance, they will start watching your vids and get into it. Sometimes you just hit a bigger market and if you get noticed, you make it.

AGREED! Though i got tired of the wheelies after the 3rd one i think. Maybe many like it because they want to do it themselves?!

I think you're bang on with what makes a good motovlogger. The only problem is that sadly being a good one, doesn't mean you'll be a popular one.

The masses all want goofy, ridiculous, often forced stuff. So unless we cater to that, we'll forever dwell in obscurity!

Yeah, been there. Done that. Wheelies and stunting in general get old quick if you're not railing a twisty road or doing something else to make it more interesting.

His latest videos have been seriously disappointing me. Hoards of dipshit Grom and motard riders pulling wheelies in the city and screwing with drivers who are just minding their own business not expecting a pack of retards to come flying up doing 15+ over the speed limit. He's got an infant daughter at this point. I was hoping he'd grow up a tad and keep the squid stuff offroad and in back alley stunt practice areas. I unsub'd after seeing that. The biggest vloggers need to do a better job role modeling for the kids looking to get into riding. It's not like we need any more dead teens and 20-somethings.

What Kuhlka said! Its not big. It's not clever and it's boring to watch over and over and over and over and.....
