Hey guys and gals looking for some info on backgrounds, what program do you guys use?
How do you get the spacing right so it lines up perfectly either side of your channel content?
is there some sort of template i can use??

thanks again

Rudi..

Hey, I use Photoshop but you can use any graphic editor that's more advanced than MS Paint like Corel or GIMP. (well, you can work with MS Paint too, but the outcome will not be what you will like unless you know what you're doing). I just don't know these programs well because I don't use them so I will not be able to help you with them further.

For your second question there is simple solution. Just google for "youtube template 2012" and you will see. There are many blank templates that will help you with aligning your background.

Hey thanks for that buddy,, got a template and have been playing around, i'm a complete photoshop novice so have a lot to learn, first attempt was not too bad with some help from youtube tutorials although think the the template i downloaded was not quite right as its not centered properly so i'll download another and try again...

Appreciate if some of you more experienced folks could take a look and give me some feedback/pointers, remember this is my first go so be gentle...

I'd like to check your work rudeboy, but your signature link gives 404. Feel free to post your backgrounds here (at smaller size, maybe with watermarks, thieves are lurking everywhere) and I will try to help and guide you :)

link in sig now fixed, remember this is my first attempt and i'm still learning, got a long way to go but hopefully in time i'll get it mastered and start doing some of the fancier stuff that i see on other folks channel's..

Here's my opinion:

Has potential to look awesome.

Get rid of the whatever it is you've done over the letters. Looks like you've used the spray can tool in MS Paint.
Change the font too. There are thousands and thousands of awesome fonts. Even plain ones can look brilliant, but yours is just a little too bland for me.

Keep it up :)

Google is your friend!

It helps if you know what type of font you want. For the font I'm currently using, I searched "grunge font" (I like grunge music, grunge fashion and other grungie things).

First link took me here: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/100-great- ... nge-fonts/

Went down till I found something I liked, clicked the link and downloaded it. Easy!

As an example for something else, I'll search something a little more vague.

"Fancy font". First result brings me here: http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=112

Some great ones there. Very fancy.

Hope that helps!

Cheers buddy thats helped a lot, much appreciated!! now deciding on which font to use.....

Not a problem; looking forward to seeing what you come up with. :)

I second the Friz about the typo.

You have nice sci-fi like effect on the background, try to stick with the theme of it. It needs some adequate font. Take a look on my background, it has asphalt/road theme so I have chosen grungy stencil font.

Use these for example:
http://www.dafont.com/dream-mma.font
http://www.dafont.com/ethnocentric.font
http://www.dafont.com/planet-kosmos.font

Dafont is great source for fonts, there are millions of them.

So,you have a nice font now, time to work with it a bit.
Your text, the name, keeps to draw my attention from videos. And your videos should be the priority, not the background. Why is that? It is too large and used effects are not helping either. This pixelated effect really looks like it's done in MS Paint (but I know EXACTLY what have you done there) and it is one of the reasons that disturbs me while I'm browsing the videos.

The next main reason is color. The background is toned in blue color. Play with custom colors and especially with layer style options. Also the sliders next to the layer style roll-out menu can help.

I will try to describe you what I would do (with respect to your Photoshop skills):
1) Choose a different, more themed font (you can use those I posted).
2) Make the typo smaller.
3) Get rid of the bewel and emboss effect. Photoshop newbies are using this effect often, but if not used properly, it can kill whole thing.
4) Set the text layer on "Overlay"

I would gladly make you a background but that wouldn't help you with your Photoshop skills :P

Cheers buddy that helps a lot, i've changed the text already but still not really suited to the overall theme, i'm really just playing around at the moment and seeing what works and what doesnt and at the same time hopefully improving my photoshop skill but all advice greatly received and appreciated,,

thanks again folks it really is helping

Rudi..

Here's my simple idea. Modern, futuristic-esque, yet subtle and not distracting. All done with basic Photoshop functions (except the custom font). About 15 minutes of work (I also have the .psd file if you want to take a look).

ok had a quick play with some of the fonts that bigfoot posted and changed the background a little bit, have a look and tell me what ye's think,, still a work in progress but you guys are helping a lot and i hope this thread is of benefit for a few more people in a similar situation to me...

exciting friday night of photoshop ahead i think hahaha...

Well, I do not have all the evening just for you :D It's friday, friday,...

It's not the best (yet) but you definitely took a step forward.

I think the texture on the font is needles. Try it without that texture, just with plain color and layer set on the "overlay" (you can also try other settings like "multiply", don't be affraid to experiment). I like what you have done to the company logos. It is a nice touch.

Pro-tip: Start new layer, take the Brush tool, set it to big soft brush at 200px-300px size. Be sure you're working at the new layer you created (highlighted when selected)! Pick white color and click on the place where the light comes out (the center of "explosion", where's the B letter). Now set this layer at lighten/multiply/overlay (see what looks the best, it differs from picture to picture) and tune it with the sliders. This layer MUST be above the text layer (just drag it above the text layer at layer list). It should help you to blend the text.
