Which is the CHEAPEST and best cam?

I've used a Veho Muvi/MD80 helmet camera for years, which has become a secondary cam to the HD one I use mounted to the bike.

For reasons I won't go into here, I want something different for my helmet camera.

My budget will not stretch to any of these Drift or Go Pro shenanigans, and I'm not interested in a second hand one.

So what cams are the best to buy CHEAP?

There are a lot of bullet-style cams on Ebay that are waterproof - under £30 for non-HD or about £50 for HD. I'd prefer the USB chargeable ones to AA bateries.

So what's your experience of them?

I bought a gopro hero 2 with 2 battery's, skeleton case, a mic, and a SD card for about $160 total. Well worth it instead of some cheap knock off camera IMHO.

I still use a drift hd170 stealth, it works good got it on ebay for $80 (US) and came with all mounts and accessories....thank God for ebay!

Are you wanting voice recording or just video though?

If just video then the f9 DVr is a great bit of kit with an internal mic

I'm just asking which are the best of the cheap ones - or which to avoid.

Not everyone vlogging out there can afford drift/stealth/go-pro stuff, so they might find it useful.

My personal budget for this, as a second camera, is as low as possible. An MD80 costs under £10 and fits inside my visor where nobody else can see it - so that takes some beating for my purpose. But the latest ones have major problems (I will get a blog together going into all that).

I guess realistically I'll pay around £50 for a replacement of some sort.

There's a great little camera that you can buy for US $70 called the Mobius Action Cam, you can find it for that price on Ebay or for $85 on Amazon Prime. Pretty great reviews & its tiny - real tiny (1080p30fps, 720p60fps & also can be a Dash cam)

Other options that come to mind :-

- Sony AS10 (without Wi-fi) used ones can be found for < $100, & really great video quality 1080p30fps
- Polaroid XS80 less than $100 new, again great video quality 1080p30fps

I am currently looking to buy my first action cam set & the above 2 are in my radar. Will be pulling the trigger real soon on one of these!

Vishnu

Excellent! That is one I've been watching on Ebay! It's about £45 in these parts from Hong Kong.

The only thing that's putting me off at the moment is that it's not waterproof, and I don't think it would fit on the inside of my helmet? You're the first person who I've seen mention it before, so I'd be very interested in hearing what you think of it if you get it!

I shall have a look at the other two you mentioned. Thanks! :)

EDIT: Just checked and it's actually the TOPCAM Action Cam I've been watching - so your Mobius is another option for me!

@NastyEvilNinja - The Mobius is a top-notch option & you can find a very detailed review on it by TECHNOMOAN (search on google or within youtube for "technomoan Mobius" )

I am not sure of the TOPCAM, maybe its the same device with different branding perhaps? The Mobius Action CAM has enough video detail to go toe-to-toe with the Go Pros & Sony ASs. Its very popular in the Remote Aircraft Video scene, as its only 38 grams or 1.3 ounces.

Glad to be of some help! :D

I have one and it's a great pocket camera and the quality is brilliant for a Chinese product

I wouldn't say it's and action camera though

Thank you @dandoolittle ! Yes I'm inching more towards the Sony AS10 simply for the external microphone ability. I think that's pretty handy.

But yes, the Mobius certainly is a brilliant little camera.

I'd agree. The Mobius is great but it would be a tight fit for a lid and the wind noise isn't the best

You've reminded to start carrying mine with me again

The one thing I don't like it is that the SD card can slip out real easy

If your willing to spend and extra tenner I'd go for this http://www.foxoffer.com/sj4000-full-hd-waterproof-action-helmet-camera-p-659.html#.Uwi3lfl_tIG

It may be the Chinese version of the gopro and it doesn't have a external mic port. But It's got a good review here

And if you want to record audio for it you could get a Dictaphone or hard wire a mic in to it.

Your choice buddy

EDIT: He recently did a video of it on the bike as well and the quality it brilliant!

To be honest, If i was after a second camera and on a budget i would buy this is one but after watching the last video think id get the proper go pro mount for it instead

Hmm loved that Mobius video - very impressive. I did see a silicon case on Ebay but I'm still not convinced of its waterproofing.

As a secondary use, there's a very strong possibility of me using this in a single-seater race car. Last time I used my Veho on a race car it rained seconds before the car went to the grid, I didn't have chance to get the waterproof case on the car, and had to leave the camera off.... and of course there was a huge crash out the back of the circuit that wrote the bloody car off! Typical.

It's good to know there are a lot more choices out there than I first thought, anyway! Keep the info coming! :)

Mine is pretty cheap 70 GBP, it comes with all the mounts, external and internal mic, 1080p HD. I did a review on youtube (watch?v=Dz7COBNN5gY) or you can google it. Koonlung HD-96 Action Cam.
