What is the age demographic of your content?

After an interesting discussion with a channel called "Flat Cap Cafe Racer" about the relevance of YouTube channels with respect to the age of the content creator and their audience, I found it interesting to see how young some of my audience is.

I very much think that the bikes I have owned have been the triggering factor to get them looking at my content rather than them actively searching for my content specifically, but it was still a surprise to see the age ranges.

The first graph is from the last 28 days and the second is over the lifetime of my content:

Ffffforget that data set because the analytics are based on folks that actually log in and put their real info like age and sex.

The only two stats that are recorded by YouTube regardless of logged in or not from what the almighty internet knows are - views and watch time.

I bet with the tech savvy folks with their adblockers, hi-fi radios, and bell bottom trousers are not counted as far as age, gender, location (thank you VPNs), and so on. Or else the channels that buy views would show a ton of traffic from Indonesia and Southeast Asian click farms.

I still imagine the analytics give a good average as a sample even if not 100%
It does not average. When it extrapolates it is taking what is known and filling in the rest of the blanks. It only gives what people tell it.

Again think about all the VPN, cookie blockers, and so on IF the viewer is even logged into YouTube. If the audience is prone to use that software then the data is not reliable. Older viewers may not be as tech savy so the data skews towards what reads from them. If only 1% of tour audience is what YouTube has data on then it assumes the 99% is the same. However that 1% is not a true random sample of the audience.

I can turn on my VPN and choose any other country. YouTube then plays ads for that country even if I am using a browser that I am not logged into.

The only reliable data YouTube reports is maybe views and watch time.

Going by that, I'd have thought that YouTube would assume all my audience was 70+ as they generally have no clue about internet privacy, VPNs or ad-blockers etc, where as the more tech-savvy viewers would be much younger, so all their data would be hidden.

I think that should be even a browser you are logged in to, because when I travel, and get the occasional chance of watching a video or two on the trip, I mostly get local language ads.

The majority of my viewership falls into two buckets: 25-34 and 35-44 for mixed content – both short & long form. I’d assume the younger 25-34 group might also have to do with the majority/average age range on YouTube as a whole.

Shorts vs Long Form
  • Shorts: additional viewership in the lowest (13-17) to highest (65+)
  • Long Form: both of these categories are null

In the UK at least, it seems bikers on average are aging and there are less young'uns getting into it, so having an older age bracket possibly means you are hitting the right demographic???
It's a shame that that's happening though. I wonder what the cause is. Risk-aversion perhaps.

I think so, although e-scoots and e-bicycles have also stopped them getting 50cc bikes and probably 125cc bikes too

I see a few of those around here. Usually ridden at silly speeds down pavements though. Hopefully not how a motorbike would be ridden. I guess at least it's them getting a bad name instead of us.

Likely the same as over here in the states. First factor is cost and not enough income. Second factor is some of youth culture has changed to a less need of personal transportation deal to experience socializing with others.

Aye... the scoots are already generally illegal, so no need for road tax, petrol or outrageous insurance premiums... and if it is already illegal, then no need to worry about a licence, test or safety kit other than a balaclava and can then ride them with impunity on the pavements etc :D

Mine is also older folks... heck, I'd post a screenshot, but that's something you whippersnappers can do that I can't :D

Actually, I'm just being lazy... but I check this occasionally, and the majority of my viewers ARE in the 45-65 group.

I ride a Harley bagger, so it's to be expected. I bet if you ride a less expensive bike, or a sportbike, you get younger viewers.

Here's me thinking the Z1000 is an upright crotch rocket but turns out it's in the same class (for viewers) as the Royal Enfield 350 :-D
