Welcome to magicdave

Hi @magicdave,

Welcome to MotoVlog.com.
Where are you from? What do you ride? Say hello, what do you like? Why are you here?

Got a photo of your bike?
Hi
thanks for the add. I've been a camera operator and editor professionally for nearly 30 years and a motorcyclist for 15. I don't get much opportunity to make my own content out of work and until recently hadn't really had the right gear (my work cameras are too big!)
I've now got an Insta360 OneRS and an old Mavic Air2.
I ride a BMW K1600GT and a 2008 R1200GSA, which is what I'll use mostly for vlogging as it's got scaffolding all round for fixing the camera!!
I'm not a fan of helmet mounts. The shot is OK but I don't really want my camera fixed to my camera.
So the inevitable audio question. I'll buy the little Zoom F2 recorder I expect and put it in my pocket with a lav in the helmet. But is there a way of triggering the start/stop remotely? If it's in my pocket I don't want to keep stopping every time I start/stop the camera which has a handlebar remote.
Or leave it running all the ride and do multiple sync events?? Maybe also ident the audio with the time?
thanks guys!!

Hello Magicdave and welcome!
Yeah I see the Zoom F2 seems to be a pretty popular choice. I’m also curious by your question on wether to leave it on to sync events or turn it on/off when planning segments.

Welcome! Sounds like you have a lot knowledge as far as camera shots.

Any external audio seems to add another layer and challenges to syncing up. Here is waht I did for a video that might work for you.

Insta has a remote. That will help do this:

GoPro has a remote that syncs my cameras with a second or so. I had a shot where a camera was mounted on a tripod but I wanted to capture the sound where I was. So I placed the second camera in my pocket with the external mic on me.

I used the remote to start and stop both cameras which made editing a lot easier as the software synced by audio and allowed me to choose which track to use in the final edit.

So you could do the same with a second Insta and remote. I know it does not involve the recorder you already have but it is a possible solution.

It'd def be simpler if you could get the audio onto the camera at source, there are wireless solutions too.
Regarding a helmet mounted camera, there are solutions to allow you to mount it via a clip onto the chin rather than a more permanent sticky pad, so you could completely remove it at will.

Welcome mate.

Ive been running a Zoom F2 with a lav mic inside the cheekpad of a Scorpion flip front helmet. It is ok up to about 40mph, but too noisy above that.

I've bought a new full face helmet to see if that makes improvements with better mic positioning, but I've not set that up yet.

I leave the Zoom F2 running all day. A new set of batteries lasts all day. You get about 10 hours recording before the low battery light comes on.

It is not as difficult matching up the audio to the visuals as you would think, even without audio markers.

I bought a Hero 8 Black with media mod recently, and mounted it on my flip front, with a mic inside the flip bit. Massive improvements. Still going to set up the Zoom inside my new helmet, but only as back up incase of the inevitable GoPro audio problems I have been warned about
