Update To Allowing My Footage To Be Used!

A few weeks ago i asked you guys if you thought it was worth it to let your footage be used on other channels and if it was any good for your channel. Well, i let a fairly popular channel (100k subs) use the video of me letting a kid sit on my bike because why not. I don't monetise my channel so it doesn't make me lose any money but he did watermark the video with my channel and provided a link. So, i thought id let you guys know the outcome so far and if its been good or bad because it might be of use to some people.

  • It has had a noticeable impact on my subs. I average 3 a day in new subs usually but these numbers can range from none to my highest which was around 10. The video has been live for 9 hours on this guys channel and my subs for the day are up to 18 (sorry, 19 now i've finished typing.)
  • Like i said i don't monetise so this might be an issue for some of you but i believe even if it takes some ad revenue of that video it will have a good impact when people sub and watch more of your videos because of exposure.
  • The video i let the guy use paints me in a good light so there may be issues if its a crash or road rage video that might bring negative attention instead of positive.
Here is my social blade numbers for the past few weeks to show the difference:

I didn't see much interest from viewers of a Russian channel which used a video of mine in a helpful riders compilation, (some comments asking for a language translation) so it will be interesting to see if there's any difference when one of the US or UK based channels that asked for the video get around to uploading it.

on the whole ad thing, my views dropped by around 50% when i turned the ads off. like youtube wasnt promoting my vids or something

Having said that, it was when i was really small and starting out

Probably. I've never had monetisation on personally as I think it can put people off a growing channel. I know I wouldn't stick around for a 30 minute ad when I don't know what I'm watching yet.

...and its good to see there are some vids showing us bikers being nice rather than bad tempered speed freak crashing tossers) :D

Ha the guys channel is mostly road rage and crashes so thankfully I'm not on one of them.

Glad that it worked out for you. For those saying it's not worth it to monetize as you get virtually nothing, YT only pays out when a threshold is reached (US $100 if not mistaken), so every little bit you get will slowly be logged and when there's enough to payout, you can cash in as perhaps a little bonus for yourself whenever that time comes along. You don't have to monitor the total, when there's enough you'll get an email notifying you that YT made a payment.

It's $100 before you can get paid. I ran a gaming channel with a friend a few years back. We gained some steam but couldn't keep it going. We ended up hitting $100 about 6 months after we quit so that was a cool surprise I guess.

I probably will monetise later on but i decided early on to only monetise once I've got an audience. I know, for me at least, that if I'm watching a creators video for the first time and i get stuck with an unskippable ad then I'm probably going to hit the back button and try elsewhere. Maybes once i hit a thousand subs ill try it and see if theres a difference in views/subs.

I monetized since the beginning (which was only a few weeks ago). I know I'm not going to actually make any money at least for a while, if ever. I'm not expecting to. But if I do grow to a point where that's possible, I want to be locked and loaded to cash in, if you know what I mean.

For those thinking of doing it later than sooner, there's no sense in delaying, it doesn't matter about your sub count, or views, obviously super high views results in higher frequency of ads being played, but it's not a guarantee ad play on EVERY view, plus you only get a tiny fraction into your account.

There is no harm at all to enable it right from the start, let the pennies and cents slowly collect, don't even bother to check the total, because you will get a notification if there's enough money for YT to make a payout.

-----------------------------

If anyone is that hardcore at closing the play window or un-subbing you just because they need to wait a bit for an un-skippable ad, I believe they aren't that interested to watch that video anyway. Or maybe they ain't smart enough to install Ad-Block or etc.

Wait, what? Do I use Ad-Block? Yes, I do. So am I evil because any potential ad on your video won't show if I view? If you think so. Why? Because, like I said, ads don't run on EVERY viewing of your video, so the chance of my AB blocking an ad running on your video is just probable, not definite. In the big picture it won't really amount to any huge amount of income lost.

Sorry for my banter and going a bit off topic.
