I apologize for the quality of the image, but I just slap a suitcase on the back of the bike for long trips and ditch the topcase. It carries all the essentials: clothes, beer, shoes. It also doubles as a makeshift backrest. As stated by other people, you should pack as light as possible. I usually pack and then unload everything and then try to cut that down again. Every trip I have ever gone on I have carried stuff that I have never touched.
That's something I haven't seen before. If it works it works though. My problem is usually that I don't pack enough sometimes. I think I try to cut or do without so much sometimes that I will forget something that I end up needing later. I should do like you said and pack then unpack and look at what is there to make sure I only have everything I actually NEED and then go from there.
9. Don't over plan the trip. Very rarely do I plan. I ride until I get tired and then find a hotel or campsite. I try to find some local fare for dinner and enjoy my time away.
