The Power Of Relevancy

Cold
So a couple of weeks ago I was starving for something to vlog about. Winter was approaching fast and I was running out of rideable days.
But then it occurred to me. Winter means snowmobiles, so I thought to myself I'd check out the local dealer and maybe vlog about snowmobiles.

A quick google revealed that not only did Yamaha launch a new snowmobile those days, but they were on tour around Norway and were showing it off at the local dealer that saturday.

So I went there, and with my DSLR I filmed various aspects of this new sled. It was a brand new Yamaha Sidewinder 998 with a goddamn Turbo. I got some good footage of it and another sled + some other junk.

When I had it all edited out I chose to narrate it via voiceover. I'm not cool enough to vlog in public like that yet. Add that I had to be kinda quiet when recording so the narration ended up being barely enough. Either way, I posted it, thinking it would be just another filler...

WRONG

2 weeks, 600 views(20 is the norm), no new subs because shitty VO, audience retention is exactly as long as the actual snowmobile footage and 40% of the traffic is from winterly Canada.

So in the end it was a giant missed opportunity. People are looking for any footage on new machines, and I failed to make a decent video on it, having underestimated the demand for such footage.

TLDR; Make sure to cover launch events for new bikes and tag your vid well, also avoid shitty VO.

Funny thing is, this is not the first time a sub-par thing I made got popular. 5-6 years ago I spent 20 mins making a Minecraft meme by photoshopping myself a blocky hand. Its still viral in the Minecraft community.

Damn that's some rough luck :/

You could always re-do the video and do a better voice over. Maybe you could still rake in some views and subs. Pretend like it never happened ;)

It doesn't sound like a missed opportunity to me. You got all those views despite lacking VO! And now a bunch more people have been exposed to your channel.

I agree with Josh - do a non-shitty VO and try again. Throw in all the facts and figures people want to know about the new sled. It makes perfect sense that people in Canada are all over this - winter has already started there!

I considered it too late to re-upload, but looking at the curves it will keep gaining views for the rest of the year. I'll try re-recording the VO with a better mic and see what happens.
