I’ve heard similar stories. I try to make it a point not anger anyone tailgating me. In a contest between my bike and a vehicle I’m not going to win. If I’m dong the speed limit, or more, not in a good position to change lanes, I lower my left arm and a make push back waving motion. Most people back off, and when they do I give a thumb-up. If not, I tend to hold my ground until It’s safe to make a lane change.
It’s tempting not to change lanes just to piss a tailgater off, but there’s a lot of road rage out there. With my helmet cam I’d rather get them in front of me, get their plates and report them if warranted.
Throwing nuts and bolts at the guy behind you, even if you claim it fell off, still makes you liable for damages. Even worse if the other guy has a dashboard cam, or recording on a smartphone.
