So lately as the weather has been nice, a lot of people have been asking about my bike when I'm at fuel stations etc and been going up to it having a look. I've seen this as harmless....

But yesterday I was at work and my colleague told me there was a man taking an awful lot of pictures and also of the VIN number.... Should I be expecting something malicious!? It's currently datatool alarmed by motion and also seperately to the ignition & with a disc lock and of course the factory handlebar lock.

What can someone do with the VIN apart clone it?

People looking at VIN numbers may be looking for a stolen bike on fake plates.

If your bike has model year variants, then a VIN would tell them plenty if a part was unique to a VIN range.

I'm not sure what good the VIN number would be. Its usually the registration plate that peole want in order to commit fuel theft or avoid speeding tickets.

Vin duplicates tend to get used on track bikes aka nicked

I own a race bike that doesn't have a v5 but the numbers add up, recipets all the way from the factory etc

Most race bikes without v5s tend to be accepted if the numbers are there etc..... Not many people know the difference between a tampered plate or not

That's certainly odd, your buddy should have helped you take photos of the guy taking photos of your bike.

A VIN is harder to change than a plate. You can buy/steal a registration easily. The VIN stamp is harder to tamper with.

you acid wash the area the vin is located using a number of different acids (depending on frame material) and it will show where the area was stamped due to the condensed area where the stamp was struck. (sorry i'm kinda a metallurgy nut / welder)

Give the cops a ring, Tell them whats happening.
Just so you have it on record.

He might be chopping the numbers on another similar bike, or he might think its his old bike that was stolen?
