Stupid Drivers

So I was out for a ride with my buddy tonight and towards the end of the ride we were getting tailgated by someone. We were on a two lane road split up by a median. The single lane we were traveling in turned into two lanes and this guy that had been tailgating us swerved around us, almost hit us, and sped by. So I flicked him off as he went by(probably shouldn't have done that). Let him go about his merry way until we got up to the stop light. As soon as my buddy and I went to turn left, the guy proceeded straight, so, I pointed at my GoPro showing that he was on camera and he politely gave me a middle finger back and was trying to provoke me even more. People are so stupid these days.

I deleted the footage because I was raging way too hard inside my helmet. I would have been too embarrassed to post it hahah.

Could of taken the sound off dude..

I haven't had too much of an issue with road rage. I just been antagonized by all sorts of stereo types a little bit. From Lifted trucks rolling coal into my car window (which [as an asthmatic] really pissed me off) to super douches that came into town on on their repsol cbr1000 with flip flops cargo shorts aviatar glasses (the whole 9 yards) and wanted to race me as a 17 year old in a station wagon

The dumb drivers are everywhere unfortunately for us we are the ones that have to watch out not them. I was riding with my Dad a while back and we had a woman on a cell phone come off an exit ramp and nearly take out both of us despite the fact his bike is metallic blue and mine is orange and it was broad daylight. Sad thing is my dad smacked her window with his hand when she came so close and she still looked at us as if we were the crazy ones in the wrong.

Oh I know. There's no escape from them. At least they teach you in the MSF course to always be scanning. It's become second nature to me. That's pretty insane, man, I'm glad to hear you guys didn't get taken out. I want to start a No Cell Phones While Driving campaign even though there are lots out there. I wanna get people to stop using them and spread awareness. Maybe that's something the community can come together to organize. It's amazing when drivers think it's your fault for their stupid actions. Especially when they're on their phones.

That would be a good campaign to start especially from the motorcycle world. To be honest if more people saw it on bikes rather than cars they would probably realize who is at danger more when they do it.

I'd love to see something like that, and even though it's an endorsable offence here, people STILL chance it.

It is suppose to be subject to fines around here as well but I have literally never seen anyone get ticketed for it nor have I heard of anyone. The only time I have even seen police pay attention to it is when the high school kids are leaving the school parking lot but it is merely a warning and ends there.

3 points on your licence and a £100 fine here. Can be more points and money if you contest it and loose, and you're pretty much guaranteed a decent prison sentence if you kill someone while on the phone.

Here in Ontario, Canada. The fines are pretty hefty at $300 to $1000 and 3 demerit points. But it doesn't seem to have changed drivers perspectives on this issue. There was a blitz on enforcing this law last September and they caught 211 drivers in Toronto. The cops were even posing as homeless people on highway exit ramps ( they were referred to as hobocops) and the public complained about it so much that it forced the police to stop that practice. I thought that it was a great idea, but unfortunately the general public seem to think that distracted driving is a non issue despite the facts.

Yeah it is kinda sad how little most people care when it comes to the danger talking on the phone causes when driving. People will get all bent out of shape if a bike squeezes through traffic but are perfectly fine with the possibility of hitting and potentially killing someone just so they can talk on the phone.

I don't see how anyone has any recourse if caught by a policeman dressed as a tramp. It's simple. It is dangerous and illegal, you chose to do it, so if you get caught, man up and take it.

When it was announced that they were going to stop this practice due to public complaint, I was very disappointed. But I think it really shows the public view on this issue.

As for what we can do as motorcyclists, I am not sure that we can do any better then what the the government already does. These are very self involved people, with no interest in motorcycles or its community.

I have seen some very powerful anti-distraction while driving PSAs come out of the UK. I am not sure how often they are played, or even if they would be effective. ( UK does some great PSAs )

I can't say I've seen many on the TV for a number of years here in the UK. I don't watch that much TV these days though, but with the inter webs there's the Think! YouTube channel.

Now I've popped to the channel, I do remember seeing the ones with the deer and the tractor through the bend that you'll see if you visit. The guy out for the perfect ride was one that did run for quite a while, mainly targeted at the mid-life crisis litre bike elitists.

Hi-viz vests with a number of possible different logos on back:

- Get off your phone!
- Phonecall more important than my life?
- Let me distract you more than your phone
- Driving? Don't touch your phone!
- Phone-using drivers kill!
- Using your phone? Get off the road!

I love that idea O8ride. I'm gonna make a vlog about this when I recover from my wreck and get as many people in on it as I can. Be on the look out for the vlog and shoot me any ideas I could throw into the video, I'll shout you guys out for the ideas.

Maybe a hi-viz vest targeting thee people where it hurts...

"Is that phone call worth more than your insurance excess and increased premium?"

A new bill in our state's legislature this session:

"
BICYCLIST SAFETY

The penalty for carelessly causing the death or serious injury of someone riding a bike, motorcycle, animal, horse-drawn carriage or wheelchair would increase from a misdemeanor to a felony under a bill (LB38) introduced by Sen. Rick Kolowski of Omaha. Kolowski also introduced a bill (LB39) that would require motorists to change lanes, if possible, to pass bicyclists.
"

I like the motorcycle part... as many motorcycle deaths we had last year here in Neb., I think it should have been a felony the whole time :o !~
