So my microphone has broken :(

Not the mic itself, but the connector jack that fits into my Drift HD170.

But it's not a normal connector, it's a special one. And I can't find a replacement anywhere :(

Not happy. Don't want to spend shedloads on a new camera when I have to spend money on fixing the issues with my new bike. That's why there has been practically no speech at all on my latest videos.

But started to hit occasional problems with the 170 anyway - screen going red, funny lines, turning itself off etc. May have to just man up and buy a new cam, and attach the old one as a backward shot

The connector that goes into the camera has nearly snapped in half. No idea if the camera receptacle also beggared.

You might be able to use a 3.5mm mic with an adaptor down to 2.5mm? Probably a quid or two off eBay. If you went for a Drift mic and asked action cameras if it would work with an adaptor, that'll be peace of mind and also a useful mic if you get a Ghost.

unfortunately it's not a pin style adapter, but a specialised usb style port

mrrrrmmmm ... dont ya hate it when every generation of the cameras has tended to have different size/style ports!?!?!? ... bastards!!

a note on your last idea above though.... see if you can locate a cheap secondhand waterproof case for the 170 or just get a new one if you want! .. if you going to do the backwards shot.... it will allow the camera on board mic to pick up all that lovely ambient bike noise .. without the wind shriek/white scream crap!!!

like this! .... not spamming my vid for views but as a demo ... only part i didnt like in this vid was the rattle/bump noises... that is the drift mount/clip rattling around .. and they are a bastard to silence in my case!

plus you can take it swimming!! .. ok .. so i might be spamming a tiny bit!! .. but its informational! ... and the sound that gets into the camera mic in both cases was .... pleasing!! :D

This is the mic port of the camera

If you have a steady hand and proper soldering equipment you can lose USB functionality on the camera and connect the mic to the USB port using readily available connectors. Otherwise, you'll have to buy a mic adapter with that weird AV connector.

That's the problem Shirou. I don't have those soldering or electrics skills to get round it, and I can't find anywhere - even ebay - with anything for that port.

As for the lovely bike noises, have you heard my scooter? lol. I could put it on my Virago which may be a little better

Found this.

For 2 quid, I think you can't go wrong with this one. Just cut away the Cinch connector and solder to your mic.

Or you can use an adaptor like this one if your mic has a standard 3.5mm phono plug.

These places say that still have some in stock:
http://www.ecogeekliving.com/drift-hd-170-action-camera-3-5-mm.html
http://www.filmtools.com/drift-3-5mm-adapter.html

Not sure if any of them will ship to your country but you could always use a 3rd party shipping company...

My microphone broke twice this week... keep on catching the cord and breaking off the wires inside the insulation. Stupid, cheap thing :( . Luckily it's a 2.5mm jack, but still, what good are videos with static ~_~ ??!.....
