Quick Question!

I'm looking into replacing my chain and I have a couple of questions...

1: are all chains interchangeable for the most part? For example, I have a Hayne's manual for my CBR and it says the part number for the chain is whatever it is and then it says 112 links.. Can i just get any chain and it'll fit or should I find that specific chain and part number?

2: I've heard many different answers, but is it necessary to replace both sprockets when replacing the chain? If it's not necessary then I won't bother, but I would like to know what all you guys think!

As always, thanks for the insight!

If the sprockets aren't visibly worn, I don't replace them. Most chains are the same on late model bikes. You just have to cut to the correct number of links, or find one that is already that length. If you have a part number, the OEM should already be the right size. Should be.

Not to say clint is wrong but when my chain is worn I change both sprockets as if they are worn they will shorten the life of the new chain.

I tend to go with the theory if the chain needs replacing do the lot. Just don't like mixing new and old when it comes to chains and sprockets.

Why the sprocket may not appear worn I'm sure they end up shaped to suit the chain they have running on them.

It's advisable (but not mandatory) to replace the sprockets along with the chain. If you only replace either one, you will stand to cause the new part to wear down sooner, hence having a shorter life and having to replace sooner (and more often) than you should be.

I always do chain and sprockets together. I find if you look after the chain by the time it needs replacing so will your sprockets.
