So for those who have been following i have just been looking at replacing my helmet, well bottom line is i bought a new helmet today (for thos that are interested see pic

Anyway that isn't what i wanted to ask about, when i was at checkout and because this new helmet comes with pinlock i decided to purchase aswell a dark tinted insert as well for the summer. When i went to open it at home i noticed on the back it says 'Track use only'

Now what is the deal with this? i am assuming and logic would suggest this isnt for road use or more specifically certified for road use. What has everyone else done? i might just return it and stick with sunglasses to avoid giving the fuzz any extra reason to pull me over if they see me especially as i am on learner plates :D

Just use it anyway, Since it is an insert the police will usually let you off (take it out and put in a bag) rather then fine you or confiscate it.

I ride with a full tint 89% mirror visor (very illegal). I have been pulled a few times and the police always let me off because it is very sunny, and I have my clear one in my bag. All I had to do was demonstrate the fact I can switch the visors in a matter of seconds. It also helps that I can not wear sunglasses because I need to wear my seeing glasses while I ride. With the insert just take it out if the weather gets bad and you wont have a problem.

The police will usually understand when you point out that without it it is infact dangerous. The sun can easily dazzle you as you go around a corner. Unlike a car, motorbikes don't have flip down sun blocks. If need be ask them to look towards the sun and ask them to imagine going 70 into that and not being able to see the cars. Then get him to look though the visor.

Also, E-mail your local police station and find out if your county police follow the ACPO regulations. If they do, you are all good.

This is another situation where the immediate reaction seems to be "will I get caught", it's not about getting caught, the limits on opacity on visors and windows are set at a level which still enables sufficient light to enter the helmet to make sure you can see.

How would you feel if a boy racer in a corsa SMIDSY'd you because he couldn't see you through his overly tinted windows?

I'd take it back if it's still in the packaging!

(and grandsatsuma, if your visor does have an 89% tint you've got a death wish)

Typo. its 79% (still lots but meh)

Its very nice, the bottom 75% is 79% then it fades to about 40% near the top so I can see very well out the top (look down a bit and look out the top). But I only use it on those bright summer days. and 79 isn't that much. You would say the same if you use it :]

Also, it is very easy to merely open it.

Grandsatsuma has answered it brilliantly. I just wanted to say nice lid ;)

Cheers i am actually really happy with it, questioned the design at the start as to whether it was 'me' or not but quite like it now!!!

I wouldn't, the legal tint on my drop down visor is far more than sufficient.

I'm sorry if I sound like a dick, but everytime you go out on a motorcycle you put your life on the line, you need to do as much to make sure you don;t become a statistic as you can.

Oh I understand you completely, I feel confident enough using it. If I have any doubt that it is not bright enough I will use the clear visor or the clear one with the "smoke" insert. Although it may not seem it from my posts, I am very careful :] I appreciate your concern. I still think you would like my visor, even if you didn't use it on the road *Winky face*

I purchased the dark tinted pinlock with my Shoei, it's excellent! As Satsuma said, the reasoning behind wearing tinted visors/pinlock is reasonable and I'm sure most police officers would understand given an explanation. Legal tints are as good as useless.

You have to have a really anal cop to ding you for a dark visor. Reason being that it does act like a safety visor as mentioned, however if you are caught out with only a dark visor and the sun has set, it's one ass clenching ride home. As long as you are reasonable you shouldn't have a problem. Think of it like an official rule which is overlooked.

So the tint is ok for on the track when your doing 200mph, but not ok on the road????? The reason they are not legal on the road is because they are too dark at night. You cant say its a safety risk. Its only a "will i get caught" issue.

Wow, that's wild! I mean, this entire thread. Police here in America (at least, in the Midwest) would not care at all. Then again, most states around here (like, every single state surrounding the state I'm in- Missouri) don't even require helmets.

I'm honeslty curious what the logic is behind the ban in allowing dark tinted or mirrored visors? For someone like me who is very sensitive to the sun (both my eyes and my skin), it is a lifesaver! I can see the logic for safety reasons at night (which I why I prefer a mirrored-- at least you can see better at night than a dark tinted, though clear is still obviously the best), but are they banned during the day, too? If so, why? *headscratch*

i think thats because in theory they cant see your face. like there gonna see it through a small viewport from 100ft anyhow...

the only worry your have with the pinlock is if you have it on when it goes dark, so just get good at taking it out. I just got a clear for my shark as most of my riding is at night and I have a drop down anyhow.
