Pondering Jumping In

The Masshole
Hi! I've enjoyed a number of motovlogs and have been pondering doing my own, but haven't quite figured out exactly what I want to do yet. I've been riding for a while, have some great roads in central and western MA, plus no end of idiotic drivers to complain about. :) I've got a GoPro and a mic, so I just need a mount, sort out my audio, and then figure out how I want to go about this. I've been doing a lot of reading here and gotten some good ideas, so thanks for all the advice you didn't know you were giving me!

I just picked up a 95 Honda Shadow ACE 1100. Before that I rode a 98 Honda PC800. I did a number of tours on that bike, including a Cabot Trail pilgrimage, but eventually I got bored with it and wanted something more comfortable and exciting. My wife and I also got a steal on a pair of Suzuki Savages (an '86 and an '01), each of which had problems, but I've mashed them together into one good bike for her to learn to ride. Only problem now is motivating her to take the course and get on the thing!

So yeah, I have no shortage of stuff to talk about. Just want to figure out the approach I want to take.

Best approach is to get out there and do it!

Any idea on what angle you are going for with the camera? I personally like the chin mount the best as it gives you a good perspective of the rider.

Here's the setup I basically have:

If you have any questions let me know!

Welcome and awesome that you have the ACE. I love the looks of those in the teal color scheme. Great job and making two bikes with issues into one. Maybe you could do a series on what all that involved in short videos? Surely someone out there might have the gremlins in their bikes.

I'm thinking chin mount in general, with other interesting angles spliced in on occasion for effect. Just gotta get a mount and work out mic placement.

I wish I'd started motovlogging before I did the Savage repairs. It would've been great material! I just got the ACE but I'm loving it. Still have some projects to do on it, so there's definitely some content there.

You could still do the Savage and just go over what had to be done.

I remember the first time I heard a Savage idle. Man, those really are something! Every time my bike goes into hot idle, it only runs on the one cylinder. Has that same lope.

Yep, I'll do vids on each of the bikes, including the PC800 I'm trying to sell. Maybe that'll help sell it. :)

The runner Savage has a stock exhaust. The parts Savage has a stock exhaust with a drilled out muffler. In the spring I'd like to swap mufflers to see how the other one sounds! I also need to see if I can make it backfire on command. Great tailgater deterrent.

The backfire would be funny!

I'd try making owners reviews of your bikes. If your not happy with the first take then just delete and have another go.

Well yay! I finally found my GoPro! Moving sucks. You lose like everything. I still can't find my lav mic, so I guess I'll have to go shopping for one. Or see if recording audio on my phone will work. Either way.

I also found that a chin mount won't work on my helmet. There's an air vent switch, but more importantly there's the button that opens my modular helmet. I kind of need that. So I'll have to mount it off to one side.

The way I see it, I should be just about ready to start motovlogging right around the same time Massachusetts riding season is over. Argh!
