I am one of those "less is more" when it comes to photo processing. HDR is not meant to make a photo appear to be a cartoon, it is meant to help bring out some washed out details. Using a "filter" instead of taking the RAW (not jpg) image and creating another image one stop up in exposure and one stop down in exposure, then layering those 3 images while doing some magic with levels and masks produce a picture closer to what actually existed, not a coloring book photo.
However, all that and a $1.25 will get you a coke. It really comes down to what you like.
