Ok I'm in need of a little advice.

I have FINALLY had an offer from my insurance (Hooray)!

Anyway. I am in a bit of a quandary, do i spend a butt load of cash on a lovely, shiny new bike? Or, do i do what i normally do and buy second hand?

Now I have always said that you lose a shed load of money as soon as you pull off the forecourt. But that only counts if/when you come to sell it. If i buy new i will buy to keep till I'm old and crippled.

But is it worth shelling out an extra 2-3k just for something with 0 miles rather than with 1-2000 miles?
If i buy new i will go for one of (test ride each first though when I'm back on 2 wheels) - 2013 - CBR600RR, Triumph Daytona 675/R, Triumph Speed Triple/R, Triumph Street Triple/R, Yamaha YZF R6, CB1000R. (Obviously which ever i i fall in love with would be the one to buy)

OR

Do i buy a 2nd hand Daytona, Speed/Street Triple, R6, CBR600RR, CBR900RRW (Another Orange one!! Ohh Yea Baby!)........et al

Whats your opinion? Justify it, tell me why! Im 50/50
 
Get a 1 year old bike with 1000 miles on it. You'll save a shed load of money on the list price, for what is essentially a brand new, run in bike. It's without a doubt what I'm doing next. I've only owned brand new bikes, and while it's great being the only owner, the depreciation isn't fun.
 
It will usually come down to what is available... can you find the bike you want with 1000 miles now? If so, do it. If not, you might want to buy new just so you can get the bike you want now.
 
It's really hard for a rider to screw up a bike that only has 1-2,000 miles on it. As long as they can prove it had the break-in service done then I would prefer a used bike over new. Saving that extra couple grand really helps in allowing me to customize a bike to my liking... upgraded seat, new exhaust, etc. I enjoy a bike far more with those slight mods than I do the new/shiny factor.

Also, on that note... my Concours14 still smells like a new Concours14 when I return from a long ride. My connie has over 11,000 miles now. "New" lasts for awhile.
 
My first bike was new. Every bike after that was slightly used and I got great deals on all of them. I don't think I'll ever buy new again.

My GSXR was 1 year old and had 500 miles. I paid $7000 when retail was about $10,000.
My XT250 was less than a year old and had 900 miles. I paid $4000 when retail was around $4500. Not as great a deal as the GSXR but I didn't have to pay tax and all the other dealer fees. I rode it for a year and sold it for $4200.
My WR250R was a year old and had 800 miles. I paid $4200 when retail was about $6000.

Be patient and find a used bike with low mileage then use the money you save for better gear and farkles.
 
Tough one really. I've always bought second hand and picked up really good deals. Yet I've known other people buy new and have non stop problems which were saved by the fact they had a three year warranty on the bike.

Personally I like the fact that by buying a used bike, I still have a couple of grand in my pocket for my next bike, it's like I've bought two bikes for the price of one. Plus at the beginning of the year I was contemplating buying new only to have an off, which would have left me gutted if it had been on the new one.

On the other hand maybe you want to buy new in order to get the latest street triple R model rather than the previous revision.

I've been no help at all here, I'd just say go with your heart. Let us know what you decide! :)
 
There's different categories of second-hand - or is the term now "pre-loved"? There's old, there's classic, there's knackered, and there's nearly new. The old and the classic allow you to tinker with them to your heart's content as they are wholly mechanical - while newer bikes (and cars) are so electronic nowadays, it's difficult to play around the engines.

The main benefit of buying new is that you know that you have broken it in well, it's not stolen, you know the full service history, plus you get the warranty etc. And they're shiny all over! My Alfa 147 is now 10 years old, 95k on the clock, and runs as smooth as when I first bought it new. Not as shiny now, and got a few scrapes mainly courtesy of the kids or my inability to park it right in the garage if I'm in a rush, but still a beaut.

In my view, everything depends on what you want to get out of it - peace of mind and complete authority over the bike, or save some money.

For that comment you've earned a sub! Fellow Alfa driver myself. First 2 Alfas I bought were brand new then my current one I got nearly new. Saved £4K that way and didn't have to worry about running it in. My CBR125 is brand spanking new but probably wouldn't buy new again.

Thanks AK, much appreciated. It's only a 147 Turismo, and I decided to forego the alloys as I knew from experience that I would scrape them on kerbs, but I've certainly not had any bother with this car. Just unhappy that when I do have to upgrade, Alfa don't do 147s anymore :(
 
Well I'm thinking brand new is doubtful unless i find an amazing deal!!

Sensible head (AKA the wife) has been put on, clear a load of debts! Can you hear it??? The sound of my heart slowly being crushed - along with my balls!

I'm now thinking i may buy another CBR900RRW - about 2k and then throw money at it! New fully adjustable shock, new fork internals, full engine overhaul, single sided swing arm............ that's like 3-4k right there! Its just finding the right bike! Burnt orange PHWARRRR!

Or a CBR1000RR-8
Or an older (07-12) Daytona 675, Street/Speed Trip, CB1000R, R6, CBR600RR.......... I just don't know! I'm looking on Ebay. Its an arse isn't it. You E-mail them loads of questions because they weren't very clear in the advert, and you get a reply with no answers to any of your questions! Do you want to sell the fucking thing!!!???

Trying to find something in my local dealers is rather annoying too! I live in the arse end of nowhere! I cant ride for another 3weeks so i have to rely on other people! I really don't like that!

Why cant dealers run up to my door and offer them to me lol!
 
There is that! and even if it rains i can come with Flask lol!

Its a nice idea isn't it! I just need to find the right bike. i have been looking and there are loads of red/blue ones and only 2 orange that i have found! My last had only 3k on the clock before it died!

Though saying that i have found a 50th anniversary with 1mile on the clock for 15k! Ouch!

But i may still get a "modern" bike.
 
Look into model year leftover bikes. I bought my wife a brand new 2011 Honda Shadow Aero... in 2012! The result was a brand new bike, 0 miles, but for thousands less than new. (Who would buy a 2011 in 2012 for full price? With 2013's around the corner?).

Shop around, there are deals!
