not a fan personally. Looks like they just make the plate bigger, and in the UK they are big enough already!

They should be fine, so long as they don't obscure the plate once illuminated. Not a fan of the looks though, interested as to why you fitted them?

That's probably nothing to do with your brake light, he probably wasn't looking. In that situation he was entirely in the wrong because you had a factory fitted, approved brake light. I worry that with your home modification there may be a chance for arguement if it happens again, as it would be easy to suggest that your modification disabled the brake light/s.

It may seem counter intuitive, but it is probably better to leave your brake light stock, if you get hit, you get hit, and it's the other persons fault, if you modify it and get hit, there's a chance for a challenge. True or not.

^ Agreed with curly.

Also what you can try is when braking just tap a couple times on either the front or rear brake just enough to turn them on and off. I do this as I figure the "flash" will alert the driver behind better than just a solid light, which of course follows the flash.

I agree with these guys.

Brake lights are only an extra anyway, he should have noticed you braking by the fact you were slowing down.

Unless it was an emergency stop, in which case brake lights wouldn't help if he was following too closely anyway.

Curly seems pretty spot on with his comment to be honest.

Just wondering.. But part of the law dictates the distance of the letters from the edge of the plate.... Couldn't that question that (if they're arsey) as he's filling the gap in....

Don't know mate, but there's probably some rule like that!

Could the insurance company class it as a modification? therefore if it was not put on the insurance, then that would make it invalid.

Dunno about that one... NORMALLY they are interested in panel alterations and performance altering mods...

One thing you can do if you would like extra brake lights is to drill holes in the back pillion hangars. Fit LEDS within those holes (red ones) and turn your rear pegs into brake lights. This is a known mod for fitting indicators. It looks relatively stylish aswell as all the cabling is hidden and the LEDS kinda are aswell in the day time.

Unlike the image you showed there with big lights suck to a numberplate....

Yeah, that is true, Looks good too! I think if you wanted to do the numberplate Stephen, could do with maybe tidying it up a bit and take your time. :)

While I like the thought you've put into it and your genuine attempt to get people to notice you slowing down, I'd seriously ask a police officer or someone like that on the legality of covering parts of your number plate with lights like that.

I can't find any information on the web relating to anything like this done previously. The best I've found is this very thread.

Four of my mates are in the Police (3 Thames Valley, one Met) and the number plate situation is complicated. Technically, technically, anything on the numberplate that isn't the number or the EU symbol with GB in it is illegal ... that includes dealer addresses/phone numbers, the border strip, anything! But you never get done for it, because it's known to be a bit daft.
Something like that is borderline because you're adding bits to the numberplate, if, however, you had the lights next to the plate, so they stuck out the sides, or above/below such that the face of the plate was as standard, you'd definatly be fine.

All that being said, your man was obviously just not looking and/or too close, if you have factory lights, that work, there's nothing more you can be expected to do.
