Funny My Time as a Submariner in the Royal Navy Q&A

This was a fun one to record, and as I wanted to do it on bike, I needed a non distracting way to remember each question and who asked it, so I got myself a new helmet with built in comms to do it and then recorded each question as an MP3 which I beamed into the helmet from my phone, I love technology! :D

What a cool idea re the audio prompter thing ;)

As far as the blog was concerned I found it VERY interesting. Whats years were you in the submarine service?

I love watching submarine movies albeit well aware they are mostly well wide of the truth :)

I imagine there's be no shortage of questions for a part 2 ... heck I can think of a couple.

What does HMS Conqueror (and the operations of that vessel) mean to submariners?
Are the stories better known to the submarine community than the general public? (while undoubtedly much ramains classified)

Were all your patrols in and out of Faslane or did you do patrols ending in other places, different to where you started?

As a submariner what was your thoughts and that of your crewmates around the capabilities of your submarine as opposed to that of American and Russian boats etc.

Have you visited older boats eg WW2 era be it British German or whatever) and what were you impressions.thoughts?

But yeah a really good job on that video mate. The only problem was some of the audio on that off-road bit. But that was only a very brief issue in a very engaging video. Hopefully that'll be one of those videos that draws people to the channnel.

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Ahh cheers @LandyVlad :)

I served in the RN from 2001 until 2013, hahaha.... I love submarine movies too, the most recent I watched was a tough one though, was about the Kursk, proper tear jerker that one.
As far as I am concerned, HMS Conqueror was at war, the ARA General Belgrano was a warship from the invading force, our enemy. The Argentines had no issues with sinking our ships that were protecting our territories that they invaded.
All my submarine patrols were from Faslane, the nuclear deterrent submarines are not allowed in many ports around the world, for obvious reasons.
Ha, there is a reason the Americans send their submarine officers to the UK to do their "Perisher" training, quite simply, we do it the best! :D The Russian Kilo Class subs are very capable, but our new Astute Class subs are the most modern in the world I believe, and our Trident replacement subs, that will replace the Vanguard Class subs I served on, they are going to be absolutely incredible as a platform.
Back in 2018 iirc, I visited the Royal Navy Submarine Museum as part of my "Motovlogging History" video series, they have an old sub there that I had a tour of, I'd been to it before when I was in the RN as our submarine escape training was done next door to the museum. The older subs were hardcore, tiny and scary places to be. If of interest to you, you may enjoy the video I made from the visit:

Thanks for the feedback, aye I can never get the mic recording levels right with my headset, should have recorded it with my TASCAM coz I can see the audio level on the display with that. Sadly, that sort of video doesn't get much attention from folk who are not subscribers, but it was a fun video to make, and was great to have an interaction with my subscribers for it :-)

I told people about it from the yammer military history group I'm on at work, so maybe 4 or 5 new watches from there too :)

Totally agree about Conqueror. London should have tasked them to take out the Cinqo-de-Mayo too :) But maybe getting a bit political on that one...

Yeah people get all worked up about nuclear for no good reason. Just sooks. Our new subs will (as always) be DE boats, and these are designed in France so I think we had to tick an options box to have the white flag deleted. :)

What I was more referring to with Conqueror was an evidently very closely guarded operation they conducted after their return from the Falklands.

You may have already read these books, but for you and anyone else interested in the topic I highly recommend:

Secrets of the Conqueror by Stuart Prebble
and
Sink the Belgrano by Mike Rossiter

Ahh, I'd heard of that mission, but that is all I know of it, but being a sonar maintainer, I'm impressed that they were able to sneak up on it, our modern towed arrays are over a kilometre in length.
I was tempted to transfer to the AUS navy when I left the RN, would have lost a rank for 2 years while I learnt the new kit, but would have been given an £80k resettlement grant to move, the sub bases are in the wrong part of AUS for me though so it would have been even worse than staying in the RN as I'd be further from my mates (my best mate lives just outside of Brisbane in Ipswich).
