just makes you wonder why the multi billion dollar manufacturers build what they build
Noise and emissions legislation mainly, I would think.
The catalytic convertor needed to meet emissions rules strangles performance (Hence why some owners get rid of it).
Similar with the 'noisier' exhausts, which wouldn't be allowed as an OEM fitment as they wouldn't pass the noise tests.
As to exactly how much power is gained by removing these, probably not a lot (only a few hp I would guess without a major remap).
So for the manufacturers, it's a compromise between meeting the rules and getting the best out of the engine.
