Mic Placement

Hey guys,

Just became a member of this forum. I have just been getting into motovlogging/ having a go pro on my helmet at all times. The problem I am running into is the fact that wherever I put the mic, all it seems to pick up is intense wind noise. I use an Olympus ME-52W and my helmet is an HJC FG-17. I cant really figure out where to put it. Ive tried it poking out of the left cheek pad and having it right in front of mouth and It makes no difference. Do the mics on the go pro work even if there is an external mic plugged in? Could that be whats picking up the noise?? any suggestions??
thanks!

i use a lapel mic, it was like $6 for 3 and it works extremely well. I have the wiring behind the cheek pad and the mic in front by my mouth. my helmet has two holes in front to let wind in by my mouth, the mic fits very well in there. I just posted my first vid, if you want check out the quality yourself and i can link you to the mic which has a wind screen. otherwise just place it somewhere you have little wind flow.

Yes I have a wind sock on it. But I guess I'll have to try different Mic placements. I tried motovlogging the other day and there was literally no voice at all and all wind noise like the Mic that was plugged in wasn't even working and all that was working was the go pro internal mic

Thata what I'm thinking but I'm how to test if that's the case. U figured the misc on the gopro would just turn off when there's a Mic plugged in

I feed mine under the cheek pad and put it half way up the left cheekpad between by visor and the bottom of the helmet. This way it doesn't get all your breathing and is out of the wind.

Before you leave next time plug it in...record a clip of you blowing in the mic...and play it back on wifi through your phone speakers...You'll know for sure the mic is working!

I used to have mine behind my cheek pad, i stuck abit of blue tac over the actual mic hole, it stopped the majority of wind noise but pick up my voice fine :) just trial and error see what works for you :)

I tore apart an old PC headset. Ripped the mic out and stuffed it behind the cheekpad.

My helmet is a convertible one, so the faceplate opens. Now my microphone sticks out in front letting me open and close the helmet without interrupting the recording.

I'm having the same problem. I put it behind my cheek pad right next to my mouth, and I took the foam off the mic. I'm going to try to move it farther back in the helmet and keep the foam on the mic.

You might need a "dead cat" windscreen. Its looks furry and cuts wind noise immensely. You can make your own for next to nothing using fabric or an old stuffed animal.

i use a neck scarf as seen in my picture to reduce wind noise and i have to say it really does do the job well, i just suff it below the helmet so the wind cant get in as easy, seems to do the job.

I still have some wind issues as well...will try some of the tips above. Thanks guys!

This is brilliant and easy!

I wonder if it will help with my bluetooth mic. That one has a lot more problems than my actioncam microphone.

it may well work gumopo, with mine it doesnt eliminate wind noise but it drastically reduces it

I'm facing the same problem and want to fix it before i do my very first Vlog. i have tried kitchen sponge in front just off side, mice behind left cheek pad and now inside it but still not happy. I got a stereo mic and it picks up really well so may just need to place it somewhere else even more so out the wind. and static. but want my voice to come through clear enough as its got enough bass in it as it is.
