Hey All!

I'll be driving my moped to the station most days to get to school and I will need some room for things when I ride it generally. Therefore, I have been considering getting a top box. However, I have no Idea about them. Here are a few questions I would really appreciate you guys answering :)

1) How would I fit one to my moped?
2) Is there something else I would need to buy to fit it? e.g can I just buy it, fit it myself without having to buy a rear rack/bars
3) I was considering going with the GIVI E300, opinions?
4) Is there any alternatives I could consider other than a top box?

Also, I need to buy a chain...I think I'm going to buy a Oxford Hardcore 1.5m Chain. Have any of you got or have had in the past, this chain or any other oxford chains? and again, possible alternatives?

Thanks :D

Yes, Buy a spare pillion seat, get a sheet or Aluiminum or Stainless steel, place it underneith your 'spare' pillion seat buy a cheap WP top box & drill it to the sheet of metal. maybe add a small chain to the bottom for security purposes?

1x Spare Pillion Seat
1x Top Box
1x Sheet of metal
4x Nut's & Bolts
1x Drill
1x Small Thin Chain

Simple & when you don't want the top box, change the pillion seat, saves the bike having all the racking on when not having the top box fitted.

Is this so you can leave the bike in the station? If so, I'd buy a xena disk lock alarm, something that will be loud & will attract people's attention due to it being a public place. + a Chain as well, if you are going to leave the bike quite a distance away I would buy the biggest/thickest chain you can.

If you're not within hearing range of the alarm, don't bother with one. People get mugged on buses every day in london and noone does anything. I regularly walk past car alarms without thinking twice about it.

It is just an expensive tool useful only if you're within earshot also easily circumvented using a bucket of water or a squeeze bottle.

I have the oxford hardcore chain myself it's thatcham approved and does the job. you'll probably want a bit of length though, 1.5 mtrs isn't very long to get around a frame and object, you've basically less than half that length to reach an object and go around it.

There comes a point above which I think insurance is meant for.

Basically prevent the little twats out for a quick ride from knicking it, organised guys... Call insurance.

If was trying to nick something and an Alarm went off I would think twice about nicking it. & going back for that matter.

in a built up area like a train station (providing thats what you meant) an alarm everyone would turn & look at it or walkers by, would glance. Most streets in london are side streets & wouldn't try to nick something in a built up area unless it was early hours. But you get stupid people so...

The alarm & chain is just a deterant, if a theif wants something they will get it. Your just trying to slow them down or annoy them enough they give up.

I wouldn't, that'd be what a thief would be expected to do. I'd continue to try and steal the bike. Don't act guilty, act pissed off.

Simple enough, if I saw a guy running from a bike i'd stop him.

if I saw a guy kicking his rims and telling his disk lock to stfu i'd think "ah... faulty alarm".

Alarms only work to alert yourself to your own kit. Noone gives a jot about anyone elses kit.

a train station with police presence might be different but if it's just in normal parking outside the station, it'll be ignored.

I suppose it can't hurt but yeah they're about as effective as a "beware of the dog" sign.

If I saw a bike with it's alarm going off I'd take a picture on my mobile phone of the guy and report it. If it's the owner and not nicked then perfect - otherwise...

Thanks for all your responses :)

My school is about a two hour drive away from where I live, so I wouldn't be able to do that. The train station is about 20 minutes away. I live kind of in the countryside hahahaa

I'll definitely consider this, I saw a cheap top box on amazon for £30

Also, I already have a disk lock, however it doesn't have an alarm. When I get some money together I'll probably buy one.The station has CCTV in the car park and on the bike section, so if anyone does steal it/try to steal it (which I hope will never happen) hopefully I can get the CCTV and give it to the police.

Thanks again for all the responses :D

That'll be the biggest deterrent, cctv.

You can buy an effective alarm for £12. I have one to stop kids siting on my bike at my parents place. It's a small black box that takes a 9v battery. Same gubbins in a xena alarm effectively.

Uses a remote keyfob to arm like a full on bike alarm. However I just lock the unit under my seat. Someone sits on it or moves it and the vibration sets off the unit.

Doesn't drain my battery, it's not susceptible to someone stuffing the alarm port with cotton wool or breaking it by pouring water in and cost less than a medium pizza, from dominos.

As others have said, buy a disk lock. Mine had problems with the alarm going off randomly so ended up taking it out, but otherwise was solid.

I had the Oxford Hardcore chain and had no problems with it, although people never tried to steal with it, I did have problems with people sitting on the bike and kicking it over. Outside all year round the chain was fine.

If you are leaving it at the station I would just get a disk lock and use a backpack for the rest of your stuff. Stations will have CCTV. (Find out for sure though).

I think the best form of security would be a big chain to detour them from stealing yours and pick someone elses instead. then have a hidden GPS tracker, you can get them off ebay and they will inform you if they detect there in motion. then you can check your bike and if its gone quickly tell the police and given them the phone number (because they use a sim).

Thats in my mind the best way to know your keep your bike.

I've got an Oxford Magnum U lock for mine. Had to leave my bike out side my work (supermarket) over night because it broke down, locked it to the trolley sign and used the alarm thing (still don't know of it works) on the back to wrap around the other side of the sign. Sadly it survived the whole night and was still there in the morning haha.

Only downside to these locks and chains is the weight. They aren't exactly light as a feather!
